My forum is running very slow. Sometimes it takes so much time and after that it shows the page and sometime not. I think mysql query is running slow because html pages are displaying without delay but php are not? So please tell how to fix this problem?

Did you turn on the debugging information? It will show MySQL performance data on the bottom of the forum, like Generated in 0.032 seconds in which 0.003 seconds were spent on a total of 13 queries. Zlib compression enabled..
What times are displayed there?

raukb5 - if you let us know the url of your site (it is not in you profile), we can have a look to see if it is slow for us

Hi, Your site responded fine to me - I had no issues viewing the forums. I did notice you are on 6.4.4 - I would recommend upgrading to a later version

I too am not having any speed issues accessing your site; in fact, it seems quite fast

It is quite fast in the off hours. However, during the day it has frequent slow downs. We suspect it has something to do with the search function and our high number of users during peak times.
Any suggestions?
On a side note we are prepared to upgrade which has been a painful process in the past. Hopefully this time it goes better.
Any tips for a better upgrade process?

are you on a shared or dedicated server - if shared then it might be due to activity on other sites.

It's a dedicated server and most likley the search function is causing the slowdown according to MySQL log here: mysql/fishing-slow.log
Can we limit the search function?

I take it we can't limit the search function?

Have you taken the time to tune MySQL yet? The search uses a fulltext index, in the version just going into beta this is changed. At the moment there isn't a lot you can do with it except edit the templates to remove some options.

A lot of people neglect tuning apache as well... Most use the default settings and completely neglect it...

Well, what I know is not really comprehensive so what I know would be miniscule in means of an actual useful article... Mainly, most people neglect to set their max servers from the default...
