Has anyone ever seen this? It comes up after surfing my forum for a while . I have to wait 10-15 minutes before being able to "get in" again. Members world-wide are reporting the same thing. Hosting company say's it's not them, plus host has large support forum and only 1 other report of same error. He is running custom software though: Software error: Can't EXlock '/home/users/web/b1528/pow.username/htdocs/sisubb/cache-V8PD8B8E/lock/global.cgi'. The operating system has run out of file locks to give me. Please ask the administrator to contact the web hosting provider. The exact error returned by the operating system is: No locks available. The 6.7.2 UBB Classic forum has been online for about 4-5 years and this started last week. It seems to happen more when I go back to the forum after a surfing session. http://www.rebelshavenforum.com/sisubb/ultimatebb.phpI've cleared cache, and rebuilt forum metadata, but it comes and goes randomly. When I can't get in, I can get in using Google Language tools(Spanish-English). Thanks in advance!

I could go on and on about file locks, but I won't, as you want a resolution, not an answer which will give you nightmares; this is a problem with your webhost, and not your forum software, they need to go play with resources as a properly configured server should never spew this error.

Wow! I've been having the same issue since last week as well. I'm still using the 6.7.2 UBB.classic as well. I've re-upped my license to potentially upgrade to Threads, but this problem also gives a PHP error - Accelerator Error: Oops, I can't get a flock on the counter file. And the following CP message - An uncaught exception has occurred while processing your request.
More information may be available on the Debug Information tab.

The exact error returned by the operating system is: No locks available From the looks of it, we're both using PowWeb and both getting the same answers. Thanks for the help Gizmo! (I plan to switch to Threads after 7.3 comes out.) [EDIT: forgot the link in case anyone is interested... http://www.legionworld.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php ]

Yeh, same problem; the issue is that the server is likely overloaded and can't handle the ammout of traffic vs resources; which is quite common with cheaper webhosts that like to oversell resources ...

@Nightcrawler: Please post the issue on the Powweb Forum, There is strength in numbers and who knows, maybe help force a resolution. I do get this once in a while also: Accelerator Error: Oops, I can't get a flock on the counter file. BTW, do not go to "Threads" unless you change host. It uses MYSQL and they have nothing but problems posted everywhere about MYSQL...

Powweb?
Ouch, there's your issue right there - they started hosting years ago for something like $5.95/month - yes, of course they've overloaded the server which I'm pretty sure hasn't been upgraded in years.

They are about $9.95 a month now, and have changed hands about 2 years ago, and continue to upgrade servers. But that does not mean they aren't overloaded to beat the band! My issue started about a week ago after 4 years of never seeing this exact issue...
"Overloaded Server" has to be right on the money....
You want to see the MYSQL complaints! Holy Cow!

That flock error is related to the current error in this topic, I'm sure if you read the entire page that shows on it'll also state this error ... And yes, Powweb is a pile of horse fecal matter, don't trust them as far as you can throw them, you know, 'overloaded server wise'...

@Nightcrawler: Please post the issue on the Powweb Forum, There is strength in numbers and who knows, maybe help force a resolution. I do get this once in a while also: Sorry. I tried to post twice to your topic on their boards and the mods there have yet to let any of my posts appear. I'm upgrading to Threads and moving to a new server (since their MySQL and PHP are crap as well) during Christmas vacation. I'm playing around now on a test site trying to get the same look and feel with Threads that I have with Classic.

Not a problem as I'll be moving also. I see references in other problem topics about Powweb limiting the number of connections to servers, both MYSQL and cgi. So there is no solution other then to move...... Thanks to everyone for their input, comments, help, etc...

Well, I'm setting up on Lunar Pages. The basic Forum is installed and I'm testing so I can transfer my active forum. All testing has passed with flying colors, but testing the accelerator from control panel, I'm getting a server error. In my error logs its says: Premature end of script headers: /home/user123/public_html/sisubb/ubbaccel_test.php Any idea what is going on?("sisubb" is my non-cgi directory). All permissions are correct. The "ubbclassic_test.cgi" session shows all is go. I hope I didn't jump out of the frying pan into the fire! Thanks in advance, again Edit: I just noticed that if I move the ubbaccel_test.php above sisubb(the non-cgi directory) it executes properly. So it must be a path issue..... I don't know enough about the whole thing to correct it...

Not necessarily, it could be a server setting issue. You might ask your hosts - and please make sure your server is running php5+ and mysql 4+ or yes, you are in the fire.

OK, I submitted a ticket to the Host's support. They are running PHP5+...
I found I can successfully execute the ubbaccel_test.php script from any other folder then where it needs to be! I even renamed the present folder and created a new sisubb, installed the ubbaccel_test.php file and it executes perfectly! So I moved all the files over into the new noncgi directory and the ubbaccel_test.php still works, but now I can't even get into control panel! Moved them back and everything is fine, I just can't use the accelerator!
This has to be a server path issue of some sort. Odd another directory of the same name keeps the forum from working...

OK, all strightened out! Turns out Luna Pages sites can't have directories with 777 permission, that have php code. When changed to 755 the php accelerator test executes just fine... I don't see any issue as yet with my non-cgi directory with 755 permission rather then the 777 as the instructions state... Thanks again guy's. If Luna pages doesn't have MYSQL issues, I may move to "Threads"

Your noncgi directory shouldn't be 777; only the cache beneath it and the "data" directories

Here's an oddity I have been seeing for a few years: If I enable short Spider Friendly url's with or without "fake" html extensions, clicking any topic or catagory takes me to the main page and never the topic... This started after a few years of trouble free operation. I notice checking "Spider Compatibility Mode" fixes it. But I wonder what changed after a few years? It has to be a host issue and I notice my new host acts the same. I know all this is basically obsolete stuff, but interesting never-the-less

It's because your server isn't configured to parse path_info; compatability mode fixes it because it isn't parsed as path_info, but breaks due to the ? in the first place, so it's ultimately worthless...

One more question. Do you think there is any pro/con for changing my server from php 4.4.7 to 5.x? My control panel has a option to select either...

But with respect to UBB 6.7.2 are there any pros or cons? I don't want to switch and have files get corrupted....

Not really, the only real php file in UBB.C is the php accelerator and it should work fine with PHP5 (however not much of the system utilizes php)

The issue has become security exploits that may crop up in php4 - it's being end-of-life'd next week and won't be receiving bugfixes/security patches. Most web hosts quit updating php4 years back anyways, but I'm just saying, if security means much to you

Next issue: I moved my 6.7.2 Classic to another server as per instructions(this is 3ed time in several years), but going into Control Pannel to do the "Upgrade", I can't find that tab anywhere. Normally it appears by itself. Anyway to force that to appear or will just doing full maintenance do the same thing?
Also, entering CP, there is no Cache Hit Percentage listed and the cache is on.....?

It should be a button, not a tab... And I'm not sure it'll show if it's not during an upgrade...

I don't remember. It's been about 2 years since I last moved the Forum. So I guess just upload the files and go! It does seem OK other then no "Cache Hit Percentage" listed and the cache is on for 3 weeks now.... Thanks!

Do you have the ubb accelerator on? Is the cache directory chmodded properly?

The cache directory was created by the basic installation of 6.7.2 Accelerator is on...

Yes, but you said you moved servers (granted you said it was 2 years ago), so you need to ensure the directory (and data within) are chmodded properly... at least to ensure that's a non-issue.
