In our present Classic 6.7.0 , we have a private forum that is accessed by a PW. It is setup in the forum settings in CP.

In 7.1, I can't find these settings. Is there a way to do this?

Private forums are controlled via groups in UBB.threads, so users need to specifically be added to a group that has read/write access to the forum in order to view it.

I'd like to add that group access to forums is far more secure than passworded forums in UBB.C; whereby you can easily click and add a user to a group, users can also share passwords which makes a "one password to forum" approach completely an "on your honor" system...

I understand that Giz, but it's gonna be messy when we do an u/g to threads. It worked in our limited World with a p/w and the users of the private forum stayed there and didn't annoy the rest of us. Now...? mad

I do kinda miss passworded forums, I guess I just adapted to the whole group thing rather quickly...

What's interesting, when I imported over, all of the users who had access to my VIP group where imported with permissions to the vip forum; so you could do a pre-emptive attack and give users access to private forums where needed...

I had a private PW protected forum with over 200 members. Will I have to open each member's profile and add them to the private Group? No batch mode?

UBB.T7 takes security in mind and uses "groups" so that you don't have to worry about users divulging passwords; you'll need to add users to a group which has access to these private forums in UBB.T7

Yes, but for large sites I can see this as a nightmare to change/update.

I think Rick needs to look at providing some type of MySQL code to allow these sites to do large scale updates to group stuff.

Well, it's all fine and dandy IF there is a way to determine which users had access; if it's simply password protected then theres no way to tell who had the password (other than users you KNOW you gave it to)... Now if they where granted permission into a forum in ubb.c or ubb.t6 the group would have been ported up to 7

Well I'll wait for the dust to settle, but if you have to do these changes one user at a time whether you have a way to allow someone else to do the work or not it's still going to be a lot of work and I'm sure many sites don't have someone they want or trust to make those changes.

I'll do some more testing with B3 and hope for the best when it's ready.

I guess I was hoping for a way to take a list of userIDs (which I do have) and have a batch process to add them to a particular group...

Overall, I certainly like that they don't need a second password, it is just been a task to manually edit over 200 users!

The only way I can think of to ease your issue, is within 7.3 is to do a member search, with the optional extras such as 'is not banned', 'post count over xx', optional field info, last post date etc., to form a list of members, then tick all those that belong to this passworded forum, and then add these people to the new group (make the new group first & set up permissions for that group)

What you could also do to make things even easier is to set up one of the optional fields to say 'Password group' & make a post in the password forum asking all those members who can see that post to populate that field with a code word -then do a search for these people as above, cross reference with your list and then add them to the new group.

Just a couple of thoughts.
