Just upgraded tonight - want to switch on Latest Photos - feeling my way around and looked in Control Panel gallery Settings and this message appears - I have no idea what it means - help please :-) ????
FATAL: It appears you don't have GD2 or ImageMagick6 installed. You cannot use the gallery features without one of these being installed on your system.

You need to either have GD2 or ImageMagick6 installed.
Do you have these installed?

Under DB, Paths & URLS / paths & URLS - do you have 'Path to Convert:' & 'Path to Mogrify:' set if you have IM6?

Yes it's pretty easy, but not exactly secure (IMHO) You have to give CMD.EXE full rights to the Web Service account which is rather dangerous if that service gets compromised as it can then run any command it wants to against your system. I was going to look at managing that security issue some but just never had time to get to it yet. You can go here to download it. ImageMagick Website

Windows Based installs should not use IM as you are required to open cmd.exe to the webserver which would be a potential security rick to your server; so GD2 is the recommendation here.

GD2 is secure; so is ImageMagick; however, to run IM on Windows you have to open access to cmd.exe to your webserver.

What is the GD library?
GD is an open source code library for the dynamic creation of images by programmers. GD creates PNG, JPEG and GIF images, among other formats. GD is commonly used to generate charts, graphics, thumbnails, and most anything else, on the fly. While not restricted to use on the web, the most common applications of GD involve web site development.
GD is written in C and various binding are available gdLibrary Home Page There currently are no 2.0.35 binaries available which means you'd have to compile your own. Don't think you can or want to so you would need to install the 2.0.34 binaries binaries indexGD2 2.0.34 Download for Windows.

Untested but thought I would post it here just in case. Will attempt to test it later on if I get time. http://www.libgd.org/FAQ_PHP#How_do_I_get_gd_to_work_with_PHP.3FWindows
The php_gd2.dll is included in a standard PHP installation for Windows, it's not enabled by default. You have to turn it on, the user may simply uncomment the line "extension=php_gd2.dll" in php.ini and restart the PHP extension.
Change:
#extension=php_gd2.dll
To:
extension=php_gd2.dll
You may also have to correct the extension directory setting from:
extension_dir = "./"
Or:
extension_dir = "./extensions"
NOTE: SUBSTITUTE THE ACTUAL PHP INSTALLATION DIRECTORY ON *YOUR* COMPUTER.
To (FOR WINDOWS):
extension_dir = "c:/php/extensions"
Thanks to Benoit Blais for this last point. Thanks also to Alan MacDougall and Perculator.

When I try to post as a guest using GD2, five times out of six the image only showed four or five letters/numbers out of the required six, which when the six of them displayd, it worked, but otherwise didn't work.
Does anybody here know what may be causing that?

Check the images/captcha/fonts directory and make sure that you only have .ttf files and an index.html file. If there is anything else in there, it could be treating it as one of the fonts to choose from, resulting in blank letters.
