It seems to me there was a routine command at one time to optimize the database...

How often do we do that? AND how do we do that? Do we shut down the forum to do that?

ANY other stuff we need to do periodically?

Well there are a few things one could do, but I'll leave it for Rick to answer here as I don't want to mislead you.

Best bet, install PHPMyAdmin (you likely have it installed), browse to your database within it, click the optimize option (usually you select the tables you want to optimize and click optimize on the dropdown)

Is it possible, and I think we had it once before, to have a script in the control panel that did this once a week?

copy and past to your SQL commands and save it under the database tools section of control panel. You can past this into the SQL commands and save it off.

This is also easily done via phpMyAdmin ( "Check tables having overhead" > "With Selected: Optimize Table" ) but I also would like to see if this could be automated, say weekly...?

Also, ubbt_ONLINE (as HEAP) cannot be "optimized" this way despite the overhead -- is there a way to clear the overhead?
