I read a few threads discussing PHP5 but I still have a big question and major fears. My web host is dropping PHP4 and asked all clients to switch over by July. I would prefer to be proactive and make the change before it is done for me. They set up a test server to check our web pages but a lot of my pages have hard coded links with fully qualified URLs which messes with the test. So I am not sure where I stand. So I have a few questions:
  • Will UBB Threads 7 work any differently with PHP5?
    .
  • Are there any precautions or changes to make before switching?
    .
  • What do you do if your forums stop working?
    .
  • Is assistance available if something should go wrong? My ISP will not provide support for 3rd party software.
    .
  • Has anyone switched from PHP4 to PHP5 (with current UBB install) and what was your experience?

1. all of my servers run PHP5/MySQL5; all run threads perfectly.
2. You'll find that some older scripts don't work as is; most providers will offer ways to run their scripts with php5 (usually they rely on register globals being on, wheras in PHP5 they're off by default).
3. threads will run perfectly on PHP5
4. 'eh i'll always be around for any threads questions hehe; most of the others will be too wink...
5. Yeh, went from PHP4.3.10 to PHP5.2 on several machines; 0 problems from my upgrades.

May I ask if there's any advantage to PHP5 over PHP4, with all else being equal?

GangsterBB.NET (Ver. 7.6.1.1)
PHP Version 5.6.40 / MySQL 5.7.23-23 (was 5.6.41-84.1) / Apache 2.4.54

Not all else is equal, but ubb.threads has been specificaly written to support both versions of PHP. If you look at the code, there are several checks in there to exececute the code specific for that PHP version.

We upgraded from php4 to php5 last week. Zero errors with UBB. But as for speed. We have not totally identified the issue yet but our load times are 20% longer now with php5.

To be fair though ubbthreads.php is loading at about the same speed. Our template has taken a big load hit though.

We use http://www.octagate.com/service/SiteTimer/?Target=AJAX to test the load speeds.

Thanks for that link to octagate - I tested my site but really don't understand the results. It tells me images on the site take the longest to load, tho that could be because photopost is loading them crazy
