I've also asked my web host about this, but at least 2 (edit: ALL, apparently!) very large threads from my forums have disappeared without a trace -- no admin/mods deleted them, nothing in the logs about deleting them, and they're not showing in the database at all. The shared server I'm on has been having some problems, but it better not end up that being the cause or I'll go ballistic on them!
Anyway, has anyone "lost" any really large threads from their forums??

My host said: Given the nature of bulletin boards, it is very unlikely that the error we had on the server today would do anything specific enough to remove very old posts from your board. If anything, they would have been posts from today. If the script vendor has any ideas for us or needs any more information, please let us know and we will do our best to entertain them. (then) I don't see any reason why even HUGE message board posts would be removed by our staff without your consent, or due to a hardware/software issue in this case. Everything else with the board appears to be working properly and we haven't received any other complaints about this, so it's highly unlikely that any of our actions or inactions have caused this. Any ideas, anyone? My members are sad!

This is sounding worse and worse... I didn't mean to sound coy, but rather I meant to say that we do not remove individual threads if an account is causing a problem. The account itself would be suspended in WHM and you would receive a notification. At this point, it looks like either a code or user error somewhere along the line. My members are discovering more and more years-old threads that were particularly large have disappeared. They, and I, are not too happy. Is there ANY possible reason for this??!!

... a thread is more than one table, so they might 'come back' if you knew more info about content of lost shite After further inspection, I do see many POST_SUBJECTs relating to the missing threads, but I don't see any TOPIC_SUBJECTs, when sorted by # of TOPIC_REPLIES Getting more and more confusing!

Could be that just your topics table is corrupt, in which case you are lucky.
However, finding the cause of this behavior is kinda important too.

I'm trying to rebuild everything now via CP to see if it comes back, but damn server problems (time outs / Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded) ... freakin' half-million posts :/

I knew this effect with Threads 7.2 (early versions). On this sometimes sticky topics vanished. I hat to search the subject (sometimes hard to remember) and if found unstick the thread. Then it comes up again.

Via phpMyAdmin, I just did a DB check and also repair, and everything seemed okay. Oddly, after that, I go to my forums (which were turned off), and they were on! From logs: BOARD_IS_CLOSED changed from '0' to '1' (but were never turned back on - but they were) Feeling a headache coming on...

If you use any of the content rebuilder tools, the board is opened after it's done! Imho a feature that should be optional.

I think a board that was specifically and physically closed should remain closed until it's specifically and physically re-opened! :/
Sure, it should reopen immediately after rebuilding, but when you choose to CLOSE the forums, they should remain closed until you reopen them, regardless of what actions you are taking...

However some people may not realise that the board is even closed for the rebuilds - having it automatically re-open will stop a few forums from remaining closed until someone contacts the admin

How old is your backup jgeoff? Maybe that is an option?
Can you see any of the info if you go into the database via PHPmyAdmin?

I backed up before updating, on May 9th... My host backs up daily, but, they overwrite previous backups and I missed yesterday's by an hour or two. :/ As stated, via phpMyAdmin, I can see POSTS, but apparently not their respective TOPICS, so, the posts don't show up - checking/repairing hasn't helped via phpMyAdmin, and rebuilding via CP hasn't helped either.

okay, that is normal that the rebuild doesn't do anything. It cannot rebuild the whole topics table from the posts table since not all the data is available.
What you could try to do is manually add a TOPIC to the topics table, with the TOPIC ID number you find in the posts table.

I know it doesn't help you - but I would ask your host why they only keep one copy of backups - this is next to useless. We go back 2 months with a maximum of 6 hours old for any backup for all our clients/servers. They are also then taking full backups which maybe is where the issue lies as the MySQL tables are probably not backed up properly and so corruption may have occurred. Incremental backups of the sever are far less intrusive. Just a few thoughts - although they do not help your current situation.

jgeoff, can you try running this query:
SELECT count( DISTINCT TOPIC_ID )
FROM ubbt_POSTS
WHERE TOPIC_ID NOT
IN (
SELECT TOPIC_ID
FROM ubbt_TOPICS
) This basicly gives a count of ghost-posts, ie, the topics are there in the posts table, but not in the topic table. You need mysql >=4.1 for it. My board reports 29, so I'm thinking about writing a basic salvaging tool to get those topics back.

Just a few thoughts - although they do not help your current situation. imho the best thought is don't rely on your host for a descent backup. Always make them yourself on a regular basis.

Yeah, and make a backup  Nothing in the admin logs about it? Well, there shouldn't be. There is no code in threads that says " remove from topic table, but keep in posts table". Well, not deliberate
