How can I do a batch re-index of all the database files? I am using 7.2.2

You can do something like:

OPTIMIZE TABLE ubbt_POSTS

for each table in your MySQL commands box. It's built-in to 7.3 as handy links

How will "optimize table" help performance?

As entries into the database are edited, deleted, added, etc., data can become what you might think as 'fragmented' - optimization re-sorts the entries, pulls out the extra spaces, etc. It's useful, but how much it helps depends a lot on how much optimization is needed.

Can you optimize with the forum open, or should you close the board?

I usually leave it open, but I am not doing this at peak hours.
