NOD32 3.0 messing up Adobe CS3 applications (false positives)ESET NOD32 False PositivesRe: Today's blunder - Official fix/apology/reassurances?? Hello,
we are very sorry for the problems you have experienced with one of the recent updates. The root of the problem was a problematic section in the code that emerged just recently. It was not a typical false positive, such as a wrong signature or heuristics triggering an alarm on benign files. I can assure you that we do make tests before releasing updates to prevent false positives from occuring. In this case, the alarm was triggered under specific circumstances varying from computer to computer (ie. a specific file flagged on one computer was not flagged on each other). Right now we are preparing a knowledge base article concerning this issue. Those who are experiencing problems should follow these instructions:
- restart the computer in Safe mode (press F8 several times before the Windows logo appears) - delete the file C:Program FilesESETESET Smart Securityem002_32.dat - delete the folder C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataESETESET Smart SecurityUpdfiles or If you have Windows Vista delete the folder C:UsersAll UsersESETESET Smart SecurityUpdfiles - delete all files in the folder C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataESETESET Smart SecurityCharon or - restart the computer - start Windows in normal mode and update ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus by hitting the button „Update virus signature database“
Note: Windows Vista uses the folder "Users" instead of "Documents and Settings"

What's NOD32? ESET delivers the fastest, most effective and most proactive antivirus and antispyware solution to eliminate viruses, spyware, adware, worms, trojans, rootkits and other malware before they attack your system. Nobody does proactive protection better than ESET. ESET - NOD32One of the big issues with most "suites" these days is that they are often VERY resource intensive to the point that they are almost worse than the things they're trying to prevent. NOD32 tries to keep the resource usage low but it too increases more with time, but is still miles ahead of Norton and McAfee (king of the market here in the USA) when it comes to lower resource usage.

Son of a... I'd never heard of ESET before so decided to check it out via their online scanning tool. It found 56 threats, all email attachments in my "Eudora 2004" attachments directory. (Yes, I have most of my emails -- since 1996!). Then the freakin' thing found Phishing.gen in my 2007 inbox archive file and PROCEEDED TO DELETE ALL MY 2007 INBOX!!! Granted, the entire archive is a single .mbx file, but STILL! Hopefully I have a backup somewhere. Edit: Nope! No backup :/ Seems like a thorough program, though....

Dang.... I would be a bit leery of running a program that just reported such an error.
Looks like someone with Thunderbird mail had a similar issue.
It should have an UNDO maybe or remove from Quarantine ?

I tried one of the other virus scanners someone recommended on here; it purged some "threats" that it listed as "not a threat", this was including my IRC applications, which where licenseware... damned autoscans lol

Yes, well even AVG has had these things happen. Just goes to show the NEED for BACKUPS - everyone out there can potentially flag and delete your stuff. Without a good backup then your hosed The point I tried to make over there is that it really doesn't matter who your favorite vendor of such software is. Sooner or later they too can accidentally flag and remove stuff they should not, but doesn't do you any good for them to apologize - If no backup then your just toast.

If you ask me, any good virus scanner won't auto purge stuff on its first auto run ... They SHOULD take and quarentine files; vs purge them completely from the system... Unless the user selects they want it to delete their entire computer lol
