This may sound like a stupid question but I just don't want to make a huge mistake!

Basically I want to change the password of the database used for my forums.

I know how to do that, but I want to know what I need to do in threads and when.
For example, do I turn off the forums, change the database password and then immediately after change the password in the threads admin?
(Will the forums disappear in the short time between doing those 2 things?)

Change the password with your webhost (however they allow you to change it) then edit includes/config.inc.php with the new password.

So I should not do that in control panel?

Can you give me an idea of what to expect online between the two - will the forums just be page not found until I make the second change (to the forums settings)?

you will get the 'unknown UBB error that only Admins can see' kinda dealio until config.inc.php matches up with the new psw..
