Hi there,
I'm getting complaints from users that 30 minutes or so isn't long enough for them to edit/create posts -- the server expires their session before they can get it posted.

I didn't see any setting in the admin area to increase the session time -- anyone know where that is?

From there you can set the number of minutes for each forum that group has access to.

The php session limit is set in php.ini - mostly.

Just to make sure we're on the same page. The user opens the posting form, takes more than 30 minutes to create their post. They hit the submit button and the post is lost because the session expired. That's the experience we mean, right?

Sessions are set in php.ini though in libs/ubbthreads.inc.php I see that Rick tries to set them in init_vars(). You can edit that and see if your server is allowing the script to modify.
