How much of a load on the server would it cause if I placed a photobucket slideshow of photos onto one of the islands? Should I have any problems?

well, the processing would be from photobucket; the code on your forum would be what, 20k? Doubt it'd cause much if any load problems (unless photobucket was laggy)... Only one way to find out though wink..

I ain't skeered. grin Wouldn't make much difference, with this hosting I have EXCEEDING CPU LIMITS is a daily thing. crazy

Yeah those cut rate hosting companies will limit your CPU usage and shut you down in a heart beat. Just don't be late with your payment. They usually secure with a credit card anyway so they are always on top.
