Thanked? yeh, I've been pushing for some "thanked" features (thanking posts more than thanking users though); better than "ranking" imo... more helpful.

Agreed. The ranking feature, while good in concept, actually seems to work more as a way to insult people so much so as I disabled member ranking in my forums. Members who are extremely helpful end up with low a ranking which in my opinion is uncalled for. A "thanking system" would work better to serve as an attaboy! You can't change human nature, but you can change the ranking system... please? smile I do think ranking posts seems to work though.

I was thinking on this, and there are 2 routes we can go. We can go with the simple "thanks" and then give a cumulitave "thanks" count in their profile.

Or we could go with something like "Was this post useful? Yes / No". And then the profile could give a total of useful / not-useful posts.

Leave that up to you guys to debate which is better wink

Aren't you talking about two separate things? User ratings and topic ratings are not one and the same, no?

I like this better than the star average method.

Or we could go with something like "Was this post useful? Yes / No".
Though basically similar to the star rating we have now, the verbiage "Was this post useful?" has more meaning AND it might encourage more topic rating participation... especially if you put the question and yes/no boxes in the topic display instead of burying it in a drop down menu. Perhaps at the bottom of the replies along with the topic menu? The only problem here is how would you disply the statisic with the topic listings - now you see the number of stars with the present topic rating method. Maybe a percentage?

And then the profile could give a total of useful / not-useful posts.

This is the part that would tie the two (user and topic) ratings together which I prefer being separate entities.

I like "thanking" posts; one site I use allows you to say "hey, this was helpful" and has an option to display "these people found this post helpful" which I really liked...

Well, here is what I'd like to see...

1. When you "thank" a post, there will be some sort of ability to show users what you felt was useful (topics, posts, or both?).

2. It shows on the post that you felt the post (or topic or both?) was useful.

For a Post

Was this Topic Helpful? yes / no would go towards the overall ranking of the topic.

Helpful member yes / no for personal rankings.

The Problem with Thanking / rating members its largely based
on your mood at the time, so for this reason i would allow
members to re-vote every month or so.

This way they can at least make amends.
I would also reccomend that the default be 100%
and members would vote down a person than build them up
from being a new memeber, so if i registered i would get
5 stars then you could rate me.

positioning?
Unfortunatly on my forum i seem to be the only one that can
be bothered to use the "Rate this Topic", so with that in mind
and some kind of "Was this helpful" next to quick reply,
IMO help get topics rated more often.

The human race is so lazy with the mouse wheel.

I like Gizmo's idea of tracking "who" say how many thumbs ups and
how many thumbs down with topics.
But i do think that it should remain private when it comes
to thanking members.

Would be great to see the overhaul of the rating system smile

Well see, with thanking a user you don't have to have it go DOWN, simply don't thank them... So you have "Gizmo has been thanked 40 times"; more of a boost than "3 stars" lol...

Though a kharma based system unfortunatley would have + and -...
