This is controlled by the MySQL configuration. If you're on a hosted server, then you'll need to take it up with them. Find out what the max number of connections is, and see if it's possible for them to bump that up.
If it's your own server, then you can edit your MySQL config file and bump up the max_connections setting. You'll need to restart MySQL for the change to take.

Thanks, Rick. The board bounced right back up after that message. I'm actually on a high volume server because the original UBB Classic board got so many hits I needed a server that could handle that kind of traffic. I imported the whole thing to Threads last month and it's been running smoothly until that message. It's a busy board with about a quarter of a million posts and 5000 members. I turned the old Classic board into an archive "read only" board, so it's not like the two boards are competing or anything. If it happens again I'll send the message to the host provider. Thanks again for the advice.

One thing that you may want to look at for hosting is Mosso. They are based on Rackspace servers, but essentially, it's a virtual server that you don't have to deal with the hosting/config issues ... in other words, you can focus on being a content/web developer. It's $100 a month and can handle any peak that you throw at it. Mosso Tell them MacTech Magazine sent you. Thanks, Neil Ticktin Publisher/Editor-in-Chief MacTech Magazine

There's a lot more to their stuff than a single virtual server. Go and check them out. Curious as to your thoughts after.

Still can't warrant such a price... i mean, wow they can scale you up... nothing i can't contact my provider about and have myself upgraded to...
Seems just like good marketing for the same old stuff
