A member on my forum informed me that his PM indicator was flashing and when He went to check his messages there was no new message. Is this even possible and if so what could cause this to happen? Has anyone else heard of this?

This happened from time to time in our older versions. We've finally been able to track this down and fix it in 7.4. Until you upgrade, if you can PM me with your admin info I'll run a few SQL commands for you to fix this for that particular user.

Thanks Rick, here's an update on this: The member got back to me and said that he had reset the date on his PC to a much earlier date to use a technical disk that expires after a certain date to force the use of updated disks.

He seems to think that this caused the indicator problem because he noticed it just after changing the date. Does this sound like that could have caused this?

Hmm, I don't think so. The flasher goes off the server time compared to a timestamp in the database. It doesn't rely on the user's local computer time at all.

Okay, now I have a different member with a PM indicator that will not go off. I logged into his account and sure enough, no messages saved and the indicator keeps blinking. Logged off, sent him a new message and it was sent. Logged back as the member the message was there so I deleted it. The indicator is still on.

Any suggestions?

That can happen with the version you're running. If you can open a ticket or PM me with the admin login info, I can run a few sql queries to fix it for that particular user.

We left off waiting for me to update my installation to see if it has any effect. I upgraded to 7.4.2 a few weeks ago when I moved servers all seemed to go well but I had forgotten about this issue. Today I was with a coworker who is a member in my forum and noticed that his PM indicator was flashing. I told him "you have mail." He replied "Nah, its been like that since I joined." I made a post looking for other members with the same false PM indicator issue.

So what should I try now? tongue

I'll have a definitive fix in for this for 7.5. It will still flash, but if they visit their list of messages and there is nothing new, it will fix it. It's been a bit more complicated to fix than I originally thought, but I've got it tracked down now.

Actually, scratch that. It will now properly calculate their true total whenever they login.

I'm not sure if that will help you solve the actual problem.

I have found that if a user who sent you a PM is deleted, the USER_ID of that sender is changed to 1 in the table 'PRIVATE_MESSAGE_POSTS' but not in the table 'PRIVATE_MESSAGE_TOPICS'. And that's why you will see the PM-envelope flashing but that PM will not turn up in your list, so you cannot read it.

I have created a solution for our forums and added a button 'Mark All Read' to the 'viewmessages' page.
Then in delete.inc.php I will set the 'MESSAGE_LAST_READ' for all PM's AND also update 'PRIVATE_MESSAGE_TOPICS' and set the 'USER_ID' to 1 in case the actual listed user_id doesn't exist. And voila, the PM-list now shows the "missing" PM too.

Off course only the second step would be actually required to correct the problem.
