I had an issue earlier, no being able to see topics. My host says you guys need to include a cron job for this -- despite my having had no problems for how many years? lol Here's the partial exchange...

This is a problem with the UBB bulletin board system. As I stated previously, most forum apps have a script that runs as a cron job that clears out the old sessions which grow large over time. This error clearly references that:

Script: /home/gbb/public_html/threads/scripts/showflat.inc.php
Line#: 416
SQL Error: The table 'ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS' is full
SQL Error #: 1114
Query: insert into ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS (TOPIC_ID) values ( 17724 )

Essentially, you need to clear the table ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS and you will no longer receive this error. It would be better for you to contact UBB support too see what they do to clear this table. At this time, this issue is not with your server or hosting service, it is with your bulletin board application which we unfortunately cannot provide support for.

Effective, but not very friendly language on their part lol.

Anyway, it's been years and I never had a problem with this. It's okay now, so just an FYI.... is there a way to prevent this in the future?

JG,

This is not a problem with the users, it is a problem with the size of the table ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS.

This table is larger than it's default size, that is why you are getting the 1114 error.

You have to clear this table, in order to stop receiving the error. The UBB forums do not have any information about this error at all?
??

This guy is grating on me now... lol

The table that stores session information in the database is for some reason no longer allowing more information to be posting to it. Since it appears to be an error within the forum software itself, it's not something we will have detailed information about how to fix it. If you can contact UBB support with the specific error message, we'll be happy to check any server configuration or run any server commands they recommend to help out with this problem.

Killing me... any ideas anyone?

I last mentioned 'ubbt_ONLINE' -- not 'ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS' -- does that make a difference to your answer? Because while I usually am able to follow along, not everyone is as knowledgeable as support, so patience might help... wink

It's now after 5AM so I'm going to bed -- and I'm quite sure my forums will be down when I wake up. I can't logically see this being a UBB problem, but we'll see...

I can't help but think you guys have imposed some limits on my account since once I was suspended temporarily for resources after years and years... but again, we'll just have to see.

Thanks wink

Okay, yeah... I wake up and it's down because ubbt_ONLINE is "full" -- I have to remove anon users via phpMyAdmin to open it back up. There are only 20 users max now, and they said they didn't change any limits on the db tables.

confused

I submitted a ticket for this a couple hours ago -- I hope Rick isn't on vacation! laugh

I just noticed that ubbt_ONLINE and ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS both are type MEMORY, yet they're getting "full" way too soon. Does this provide a clue?

yes -- you are sharing memory resident tables (prolly, if it's shared hosting) and that memory is also used by other peeps on that box, so they become 'full', even thought they aren't wink

if you are on a dedi box, disregard what i just said..

Hey, SD!

Thing is, as soon as it reaches 20 users (members/guests/spiders) I get a SQL error. Every time, since last night! I've been sitting here like a jerk bumping the ANONS every few minutes via phpMyAdin.

Current host says they didn't put any limits on, but it sure seems like it. And 20? That's VERY low. frown

PS - I'd gladly change hosting once I get some income back! wink

I'm getting very frustrated here... they just told me "If you expect to have this amount of visitors consistently, you may wish to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server."

I'm like... if I expect to have TWENTY (20) visitors??? I can have that many spiders! I had over 250 once and didn't have a problem...!

I REALLY can't accept that nonsense! mad

Well, I had to shut most of my forums out to guests to hopefully slow this down.

It sure would be nice if with 1 click you could temporarily ban all known spiders, and with another disallowing guest access... ahh well.

Hopefully Rick will perform some magic whenever he gets around. wink

phpMyAdmin allows you to change the table type from Memory to MyIsam, if you simply MUST...

that would at least determine if it's a memory issue wink

Not a bad idea, SD!

Would there be any significant drawbacks to doing so, if it came to that? (By that "MUST" I assume there might be! laugh )

well, they are in MEMORY for a reason -- speed... but if you are competing for memory that isn't always available to you, you may have to sacrifice and go disk based and hope for a forgiving mysql cache that somehow makes the change not so bad wink

Okay, I tried it, and so far it's working! At least enough to get passed 20 freakin' users at once. whistle wink Thanks, SD! I'm still waiting to hear what Rick has to say and will hopefully be able to go back to MEMORY...

SD pretty much nailed it. There is a setting that limits this "max_heap_table_size". It sounds like they have this pretty low, so when you reach it, it gives the table is full error.

Unfortunately, there really isn't too much you can do about it other than ask them if they can bump that up to something a little more respectable.

Thanks Rick - so much for them "not limiting" anything. :/ The ubbt_TOPIC_VIEWS seems to get to around 350 or so before that would crash, so I had to change that as well.

I'll see what they have to say -- thanks again guys!

So are they going to give up some free stuff for shutting you down.
Assuming it was a typo on their side.
