The ability to backup the database is excellent including the ability to add drop statements to the backed up files.
The ability to restore database files should also be added to relieve the ability of using multiple software packages to administrate and or manage your message board. This would be really handy when moving from one server to another or resoting your board cus you really messed up and deleted all your posts, by accident, lol.

I agree adding some of the simple commands like restore Would help dummies like me that have never performed that task. This would help new owners if it is needed until there skill level has increased to take advantage of other methods.

Well don't forget that there is already dedicated software in your Hosting Package control panel for doing this, or at least there should be.

I did not forget. I just said for newbies like myself that it is intimidating to use with the cryptic descriptions like drop table. And the 10 or so options to export a table. It would be nice to have a plain simple option to perform tasks directly from the control panel until you are more experienced with them. Besides if we have the option to backup in the control panel why don't we have the option to restore. Or in mysql terms export/import

I would advise against using the backup option in your forum... it'll take forever...

For me it takes longer to ftp a backup of the scripts and folders than it takes to backup the MYSQL tables using the control panel and then ftp them to my desktop. But that is me I know there are limits for timeouts but I have never excedded them ,YET. When I do I will holler at all of you for help and up my post count at the same time

I would have to agree with Gizmo on this. It really is not well designed and adept at doing backup or restore with the control panel of UBB.
I can understand where you're coming from as far as the "learning curve" etc, but I suppose maybe better to have a small FAQ on it or link to some post for current discussion for new users. If the script died from lack of connection you could really mess up your forum. Most of the other tools from your host provider are less likely to run into that kind of an issue.

That's my point. I have used the control panel, phpadmin,Mysql commands to perform backups. I have never had to restore a database. But I have read so many ways to do it and the caveats with each method. I don't know what will work or not work when I need it. So I do all of them.

THE best method if you have it is doing it by command line via SSH if you're allowed to (IMHO).

THE best method if you have it is doing it by command line via SSH if you're allowed to (IMHO). Highly agreed; it'll process fast, and you have the option to tar the file to compress it and make it way easy to download... Currently no ssh option with my windows host. One of many reasons I don't like windows ... Linux just has all of the tools I need in one quick place

I would have to agree with Gizmo on this. It really is not well designed and adept at doing backup or restore with the control panel of UBB. I do like the design, it might be slow, but I've used it numerous times, because if all else fails, the internal backup will work.
