Big stuff
I want to be able to put these in a gallery. They work very nicely on my Androids, because I can enlarge them, and move the viewing area around. I can actually read them. On a PC, I can't do that, so the images are pretty much useless. There is no way around that, right?

if 1) your forum allows large images to be attached, and 2) you've set the forum Image Resizing to be large enough, you can 3) right click on the attached image and choose "View Image" to view it in full size, outside of UBB.thread's built-in automatic image viewer (Lightbox).

Yup - I have the sizes set appropriately, and the view image works. I was hoping to avoid that, but maybe it's the best way for now. It may be awkward for some users.

This post and question was regarding IMAGE attachments in a GALLERY. Your second post is regarding file attachments for regular forum discussion threads is at: https://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/261986/big-stuff-the-usual-wayOne of the differences between a GALLERY and a discussion thread with FILE attachments, is; A gallery cannot have replies with attachments, since the point of a gallery is to discuss the main post/gallery of images. A discussion thread on the other hand, is meant to continue conversation and add to the topic by allowing further images and files to be attached/threaded to it.

In your previous post, you've inlined a hot-linked image. An image hosted by a 3rd party. If you need to host the image yourself, through attached files, you have a couple of options. The first one I've already mentioned. The other is more useful for when you have a batch of images, which can be done by archiving them in to a ZIP or RAR file. And finally, which I tend to use all over my forums, is to compile all of the images that are clearly documents (exactly as your post is using for an example) in to a PDF file. And then attach the PDF to your post. The inline PDF viewer built in to UBB.threads 7.6.2+ can easily handle that. It will display multiple pages in order, and allow zooming in and out, and because it is a PDF, It is printer friendly. example: https://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/261992/attached-pdf-sample

Yes, the intent was to eventually get it into a .pdf, as you suggest. This will probably take more than a year to accomplish. I am looking at different intermediate, or interim, options, although I guess I could just upload a new .pdf once a week or so. What I really need is a flock of interns.
The hotlinked one is linked from my server. I have a really big server sitting there pretty much doing nothing.
I have a lot of other documents that work better as individuals in the existing forums and galleries, but none are in a large format like this one. It is in large ledgers that are a few hundred pages each. Sometimes you have to blow them up quite a bit to decipher the characters.
Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

I responded, and I just realized I need to upgrade to 7.6.2. Crap.

Maybe there is a lightbox solution that includes hover-zoom like Magic Zoom Plus from www.magictoolbox.comAbbott

Magictoolbox's Magic Zoom is commercial software that requires an steep license fee for each installation every 12 months. It also adds bulk by duplicating features of the current Colorbox lightbox UBB.threads already uses for image display and many window actions that are not specific to displaying images, ie; iframe lightboxes.
On mobile, long-press the image and choose "View Image" or "Open image in new tab" from the menu to do all the zooming you'd like? Doing that will optionally allow you to download the image to your device.
On desktop, double-click to zoom in/out of the image.
On either, click/tap the + or - magnifying-glass image in the image control bar (top-right) to zoom in our out of the image.
If the forum owner has the setting toggled, click on the download button to download the current image from the forum's gallery on to your device.
