I just installed and have been setting up categories. I have not seen a way from the CP to assign an icon to a category, though categories appear to have a default icon attached.

Can anyone tell me how I can change this?

You can assign an image to the individual forums on the forum editor in the control panel, however the default icon isn't changeable without actually uploading new ones via FTP since they are used to designate unread/read in the forum.

I was actually asking about category icons, not forum.

These are the icons I would like to change - even if it invloves some hard coding.

We are going to have 10 categories and would like to have the opportunity to brand each of them as so:

Rick mentioned uploading via FTP - what dir would I upload to and where would I attach it to the specific category?

Please advise - I can smell the finish line from where I am standing!

There are two files used
1. newposts.gif
2.nonewposts.gif
A set for each style installed.
There are a couple ways to do this like creating a new style and adding the image folders. The best way to explain this would be to try a custom style already made like the black and gold Rick did. HERE It is a custom style with its own images.

In simple terms replace each one with your new graphic named the same as above.
Depending on the style used is where your graphic is placed.
The stock install has two locations
/images/general/default_dark/
/images/general/default/

not to mislead you but this method will replace the graphic across all categories. So you can't have a different graphic for each category.

That's a step in the right direction, I would just like to show a different image for each category - just like we are able to do with each forum - I really don't even need them to change.

It was not designed to have different graphics for each category. The software will look for those two file names in the folder specified in the styles setting in the control panel. Even if they are the same graphice you wold need two files.

Other than that it would be a modification out of scope with this site.
Try your luck at UBBDEV.COM That site is dedicated to mods.

Thanks Ruben.

Y'all have been great in helping get this on its feet. All in all, it's been pretty smooth - no complaints here!

I'll try UBBDev and see what happens.
