Is there a way to alphabetize threads on a forum? I have some forums that are archive forums and it would easier to find specific subjects if grouped together as they would be if alphabetized.
Also I have a recipe forum which would benefit by alphabetizing the threads. Within the forums, subjects could be broken down into groups if the identifier was put at the beginning of the subject line, like fish, venison, rabbit, etc. Being in alphabetical order, members could easily find all recipes for a specific subject.
I can't find an option for alphabetizing, but thought maybe someone may know how I could do it.
Thanks - Paul

I wasn't referring to the order in which the forums appear, but rather the order in which threads appear in a forum.

Well, the standard for threads is the latest post in a thread puts it on top and so on. If you want to do it any other way then your risking having post's not read.

Ok, I don't think I'm being very clear. Let me explain it this way...
Lets say I have a wild game recipe forum and I want to list the threads on that forum in alphabetical order so people could find what they want easily without reading the subject of every post on the forum.
If the subject line of the threads could be arranged in alphabetical order, it would look something like this....
Bread... Dutch oven biscuits Bread... Aunt Jane's blueberry muffins Fish... Broiled halibut Fish... Deep fried catfish Fish... Grandmas beer batter bass Fish... Salmon cheese ball Venison... Fried backstraps Venison... Roasted with cream of mushroom soup Venison... Uncle Jack's stew
This would also be a great way to organize threads in archive files in a how-to forum with varied subjects. However, if the forum is not organized in aphabetical order, it doesn't work well, and that's the problem I have.

You'd need to modify the postlist script to change the default sort order to alphabetical. Somewhat outside the scope of this forum so you might check at ubbdev for more help, but for a nudge in the right direction, you'd be looking to add some code to that script that would look something like this to postlist where some of the other variables are being defined. # would be changed to the actual forum id of that particular forum
if ($Board == "#") {
$sort = 1;
$order = "asc";
}

Is there any chance that this could become an option in the future? Perhaps I'm the only one who has need of such an option.

Might be a good option for those with archived topics.

Yes, we will be putting in an option to specify a default sort order for forums. It's pretty simple, so might be able to get it in for 7.5.

i've done this as a modification for mitch.. he had a classifieds forum and alphabetic was a logical choice for THAT forum..
i'd call it a small to medium sized modification, but it's outside of the stock code..

Yes, what sirdude did worked well on my board for a "member directory" forum, where people can create threads about themselves. The thread serves as sort of a more detailed user profile. The title of the thread is the person's user name. As trapperman is talking about here, the most logical way to sort the threads is alpha order.
I like your idea to alpha sort the recipe forum. I may just do the same.
