I currently have Ver 7.2 installed. Waiting to add Ver 7.4 with unlimited Islands
I also use the portal page with several islands.
I would like to be able to add a custom content island in the same table column on the left as the rest of them in a specific forum.
For an example I would have islands as the default on the left and right column.
Then in forum one only add island 6 on the left
Then in forum two only add island 7 on the left but exclude island 6.
All other forums would show the default islands

I have not attempted this yet as I am looking for advise on what would be the most simplistic way to approach this.

You can add unique headers/footers to specific forums, so, using the external versions of CI's you could place them anywhere.

Thanks Allen, But to be more specific on my question. Here on this site on the left islands at the top we have "Site Links"
Can we have say "Site Links 2" appear at the exact same location replacing "Site Links" on some forums but not all?
Not sure how to approach this. Should I turn off all islands on the left and then add unique header/footer to all forums and place what islands are needed for all forums.?

My thinking is to use the header/footer insert I would place the forum in a table and add a left column. But if I do that then it would create a extra column on the left and skew the existing islands if there are some there already.

On the fly replacement without some type of cookie management seems like it would be difficult, but if someone has an idea that would be nice to see their work-around.

There's no reason why you couldn't start assigning IDs to your content islands via javascript in your content island (find the grandparent node and set its ID), then use CSS styling in your forum header includes to hide or display that ID.

It wouldn't actually stop the content island being generated and sent to the browser, but would stop it being displayed there.

i've done this for a customer..

the basic thing i did was to create an /ads directory under cache_builders

i grabbed a custom island template and replicated it about 15 times.. made each advert unique...

then in the send_header and send_footer functions (html.inc.php), i decided which ad island to include based upon :

1. $header['Category']
2. $ubb
3. $header['Board']

those 3 allowed me to determine 'where' i was in the board for any context..

then header.tpl and footer.tpl were modified to just include the designated ad island, based upon context and voila.. forum / context sensitive adverts (or islands)..

note: i used a separate /ads sub-dir because i just wanted to keep it from interfering with standard content islands and i also wanted the islands to not have $tbopen and $tbclose stuff either...

it's doable smile
