I hate to say this is how it was in classic but here it goes.
In classic there was a area I believe in the footer section. That when you opened a forum. There was a informational area that stated who can post, who can reply.
Now when you open a forum the only way to know is to try to post or reply nothing happens.
No message to the user that they are not allowed to post or reply. Or who can.

Nice to have would be something to indicate same.

Don't get me wrong it wasn't perfect in classic either.
You were only informed when viewing a forum not when making a reply. And it was a little obscure tucked away in the very bottom of the screen with all the other clutter.

I just think that for less experienced users, they think that they are doing something wrong since they can't post or reply. When it is just a permission setting that prohibits them.

As to your comment:

I can't fault Infopop.
Poor Rick gets bombarded with suggestions from several forums for changes(change log, feature suggestions, bug fixes,General chat,ETC) plus all the private messages.
Then he has his own agenda items to address.
In fact I don't know how he keeps up with it at all.
You don't see other places like Microsoft soliciting feedback directly from the users and still provide user support(supported or not) and still does all the programming.

PS: Don't overlook the Beta testers as a resource here for support. But they provide suggestions also.

I think that every feature that was in classic should have been in threads a long time ago. I still use classic on one of my sites and the only reason I never upgraded is for the simple fact I can look at every IP address used by a single user their entire time as a member. This feature alone is priceless if you ever have a problem with a user and wish to ban them.

There are lots of nice things that are in the classic that never made it into threads that should have and could have.
