I like this new feature - however without the ability for people to join groups I can't see it being used.
I would love to have groups, but the last thing that I wish to do is to assign people to groups.
I would prefer them to be able to join publically open groups. Other groups of course should not be open to all.
A third option is for group joining to be approved by a group leader.

I believe the main idea behind this is to give subscribing members special icons next to their name. I know that it was I plan on doing with it.

Yeh, I've been whining for some time that I'd like to see some way for us to have group permisions...
Users able to join open groups or request to join a private group (like they can in PHPBB); then have "group moderators" who can maintian groups...
Would add a lot to some forums imo...
