I have a forum on my board set up with a monthly recurring payment, and several members want to make a single one time payment.

if I include the "donation" option for the one time payment is that open ended or is there is a time limit.

The recurring is for a years worth of access, the donation would that go on forever ?

You could make the payment 12x its current and just have it recur once a year.
