Members of our small little forum are getting really excited about the number of 'recent visitors' we've had. They think that many people visit our forum because the conversation is more interesting and stimulating than elsewhere. (and at times i believe it has been)

Meanwhile our registration que is flooded with spambots waiting for approval. (which is another story)

Is it likely that many of those 'Recent Visitors' are just spambots?

Again, we're running 6.2.0. Which i assume is classic. Thanks for reading.

Very very likely it could be.
Especially if you have a open board.
And per your statement "registration que is flooded" is another hint.

If you completely make the whole board private, That will cut down on the spambots visiting. But you may not wish that option.

You will still have them attempting to register.
Another reason to upgrade to threads.
Besides all other security issues you may have with classic.

Well, a guest could be either a spambot, an unflagged search engine bot, or a general guest.

Thanks very much to both Gizmo and Ruben for responding.

Actually I don't wish that. And neither does the rest of the board.

All the same, i greatly appreciate you informing me of all possible remedies.

Ruben,

You're very correct to think that I'd want to manage these spambots.

I ran some searches of the Classic forums. And the old posts confirm the advice you're giving me now. Our open public forum can upgrade to threads (like most others did) or continue to get flooded with spambots.

I was using classic until about a year and a half ago.
The difference is night and day as far as spam registrations.
However some people do have problems with the captcha and verify email to register. But I don't bother with moderating registrations anymore. So the very few that can't figure it out takes far less time to hand hold that going through hundreds of spam registrations to approve. Or I should say reject.

Newer versions of classic handled the spambots better. You might at least see if there's a common ip address and block it.
