Hi all
Does anyone have any decent stats on typical bandwidth usage for a UBB-based forum by x number of online users??

Thanks

hmm.. that will vary tremendously depending on compression settings for .php pages.

It will depend on:
1. popularity by users visiting
2. popularity of how long users stay
3. popularity of how often Search Engines visit/crawl
4. popularity of how good your content is (based on incoming search engine users)
etc

It's ultimately impossible to just say a static figure like "4gb per month"... Though if you're just starting a new site, that may be a logical assumption...

Are you trying to figure out what hosting package you may need for bandwidth for a site you have or for a new host your moving to or something?

For whatever it is worth or worthless.
I have a board that is quite small since it is targeted to a select group of people.
The ubb stats say:
402 Members
25 Forums
1270 Topics
6148 Posts

Max Online: 10

My bandwidth runs about 1 gb per month.
That includes the spiders( usually two)
And also includes daily backups.

As JAISP stated,
I don't know what you would use it for other than trying to figure out if a new host with limits will meet your needs.
Or possibly you are challenging your existing host.

Since you seem to already be using this product. You would be the best person to determine your bandwidth.
You should have statistics reports in your control panel.
It depends on what the users are doing. Including how successful you are with search engines.
If most of your members are uploading and downloading attachments and pictures your numbers will be much higher than someone that does not.

Also don't forget you will incur disk space with mysql and attachments.
That is why most of the people here with larger boards are on a dedicated or VPS server.

same old same.
Bandwidth,Disk storage,CPU time Bla Bla Bla
I guess crasher is moving or has a issue with existing host that the site was turned off and trying to guesstimate what usage he needs.
All I am saying is he has a advantage to a net new UBBer that he can get stats on the existing site.

Sorry chaps for being so vague....
I'm not worried about my current site - and am very happy with my new hosts.
I am working on several other projects, one of which could entail a large install of ubb with a significant number of active users.
I was after some metrics as to bandwidth in order to know what hosting package i should shoot for with this project.
Not worried about disk space as its cheap-as-chips (as they say on this side of the pond), but bandwidth is king.

Oh and JAISP, self-hosting is not an option for me frown

On our site, with mainly tekst (we don't allow attachments), we generate around 70 gb monthly.

awstats reports around 50,000 unique visitors, 3880265 pages, and 27067916 hits.

This runs comfortably on a shared hosting environment.

As for forumstats:
28 Forums
13697 Topics
487359 Posts

And most of this stuff is from the last year only, older then that goes into our archives.

I have a reseller account with my current hosts and the smallest they do is 100gb monthly so this looks like a comfy fit for starters then smile
As for the ubbstats being smaller during Gizmo's "leave" - i tend to find i do use the net far less during leave time as my better half always finds things to be done around the home/garden...I end up going back to work for a rest tongue
