With the spaces and login names, I've noticed a preceding space may be used with a display name. This makes it possible for two members to apparently have the same name, opening up a door to possible "identity theft" so to speak.

That used to be the case, especially with special characters turned on. Since 7.5 both the Login and Display names get passed through trim() before being added to the database.

In another post on the space issue with names. It was found that login names had the issue with no spaces in the middle of the name but public display names allowed spaces V7.5.2
With this bug fix are the space rules now enforced with both name fields now?

Yep spaces will now be allowed inside a login name, such as "Joe Blow", but not at the beginning or end.

Just in case anyone asks. This should be out within probably about a week or so max. The only real thing I've left is to see if this works for those people having IE8 users that can't login.

The only problem with the IE issue Rick is arentzen seemed to be the only somewhat consistent site with the problem and he kinda fixed it with a URL rewrite or so it seems. So who knows what the real problem is.

I have 7.5 and just earlier this week was able to change a member's display name to that of another's, but with a preceding space. I think the display name was not held to the spaces rule like the login name was prior to 7.5.3. That is why I asked if the same rules apply now to both names and the space inside the name was allowed now for the login name

I have 7.5 and just earlier this week was able to change a member's display name to that of another's, but with a preceding space. Did you do that through the control panel? There are no restrictions to changes done via the control panel, but I guess I should at least pass them through trim()

If that is the case Rick. In using the control panel is there a check in place to not allow dup's in either name? If not I vote for no duplicates in both fields regardless of how a name is entered or changed. And the spaces rule should apply in either case.

It does check to make sure that there are no exact duplicates. It's checked at the time the user requests the display name change. It also checks again before it's actually changed by the admin (just in case a new user registered with that name or something before the approval).
It just doesn't disallow any characters (although I just altered it so it will strip off spaces at the beginning or end).

Alright!! I like the thinking that the same rule applies for every scenario.

My upgrade to 7.5.3 went smoothly. But now I have a poster telling me: "Can't post and the active posts don't work with my IE 8." Beyond telling him to clear all cookies and try again I'm not sure how to advise him.

Theres a bug in the search page with the labels, the "subject and body" label links you to the "body" ratio ...

Guess I'll wait on this upgrade then. They're far from show stoppers; and I doubt 7.5.4 would be out at any time close to now lol... I'd like to know if the bbcode issue was fixed, but I figure I'll just upload the new bbcode.inc.php file and go edit one of the posts on my forum to see (later) Yeh, just checked; works well in 7.5.3
