Someone referred me here to get some help. All I want to know, which I can't find anywhere... is what is the maximum length that a post can be on a UBB forum?
I've searched and searched and can't find the information anywhere, but when I tried to post a really long post about a year ago, it got "cut off" and I had to split it up into two posts.
I figured I'd try it again yesterday and then determined myself manually the post count limit by slowly adding characters, but now whenever I try the same post again, it times out instead of cutting off.
So does ANYONE know the post length limit on a UBB board???

By default, the posts field will hold 65535 characters.

Well, I believe the max post size is limited by the max size the field type in the database allows. Which in this case is the "text" type which is designed to allow very large portions of text to be inserted. I believe he "max size" of the common " text" field in a MySQL database is 65535 characters

Strange, the UBB board that I frequent doesn't allow HALF that many characters before it "times out" or errors out... is this a setting that a board admin can change and set?

No, that setting is actually how MySQL works; it's built into the specifications... It's not a UBB thing (the length).
As for why the message would die, its possible the server could be experiencing some load processing your post and the php's max execution time variable could be causing the script to abort processing past the set variable...

It could be something in their php settings as well. There are settings that will limit the max size of a $_POST variable and if it's actually cutting yours off before the 65k count, it could be that.

It's also an older version that appears to have been modified and definitely has some serious issues. Well, serious unless we are to believe it has multiple forums each containing 4.2 BILLION topics with only 6 thousand posts. That's a neat trick if you can do it, I tend to think that board is sick and in need of repair.

I tend to think that board is sick and in need of repair. So do most of the people using it. There have been plans to move all of NCSoft's official message boards to VBulletin to match Dungeon Runners, but that plan seems to have stalled, even with the City of Heroes team using a VBulletin board for a couple closed betas. Because of the apparent plan to change board software completely, the people in charge of maintaining the board don't seem inclined to fix problems that crop up, unless people are actually being denied access to the board. (And of course being denied access to the board is a major problem for them, since it's one of the services provided as a part of the $15/mo cost to play the game.)
