I would like to leave my boards available for read-only access. IS there an easy to do this globally for all forums?

The easiest and quickest way is just to do a SQL call if you want them read only for everyone (which it looks like you do). The following SQL command will get rid of the ability to create topics and replies for all groups, including the admin group, so be sure that's what you want You can always re-enable the admin group if you want afterward.

Turns out there is a "Mass Permission copy" for the forums that does what I want.

I just selected one of my existing 'read-only' forums and used it as the template permissions to mass-copy to all the rest of the forums. Worked great, was easy and fast and didn't require any SQL black-magic.

Well that works too.
But Ricks suggestion would have been quicker.
