I wanted to know would cause compiled templates folder to have over 100000 old templates here slowing the site to a crawl.. what would cause this ?

There was 100000 files in this folder and when I looked at the templates they looked legit. After I deleted them all but the index.html the site was back to normal. hmmm

Those are supposed to be auto-deleted by the smarty template engine. I've seen this happen on one server that had some very funky permissions that would allow the files to be modified/created but not deleted. First thing I'd do is just take a quick look at the permissions of the folders and the files within.
