Nice. That's the exact same cooler I went with when I rebuilt my system earlier this year.

Nice. I have pretty much the same thing in my personal tower.
Now my blades uses specialized cooling units designed for just that type server.

I did a bit of searching and it seemed to have great reviews on its cooling ability and low noise, and the price was great.

I have 3 intake fans, 3 exhaust fans, 2 power supply fans, the CPU fan, 2 video card fans, and a few fans on the mother board.
You can barely hear my tower running.
Now my rack is a different story. That you can hear running.

I have a 120mm fan on the back of the case, an 80 on the side, and two 92mm in front... my hard drives make more noise than the fans. I don't think I will ever need to put the CPU fan on high. I"m using an Antec Titan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129027

as to how loud it is on high, I can always replace the fan with a quieter one...

Make that old box into a web server so you can play around with the stuff and learn from it. I will upload the ISO for Linux onto my server so you can download it and burn the install CD.

I use Apache 2/MySQL4/PHP5 on my Ubuntu box for my local dev machine; its an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with a gig of ram IIRC... Doesnt do much but act as a upnp streamer and dev box

I had thought of that, problem is I have very limited space, and already have 3 towers setup in this room.
I think I REALLY need to clean this room up.. I have too much stuff and it is taking over!

well damn, my old hauppauge card doesn't work with win7 x64.
was hoping to check out the media center a bit more thoroughly.
I popped it into my XP machine for shits and grins, haven't had it plugged in in ages, I installed BeyondTV and the key I had from when version 4 was first released still worked!
at least I know the components are working.. might be time to start on a media box for downstairs, I just don't want to end up with a full tower down there.. just no room for it. the gears are starting to turn.... I'm getting ideas...

Could always have it as a headless system (after you get stuff installed on it) then throw it somewhere out of the way

big case, unless I got rid of my tube TV and went with a nice big flat screen (which will happen at some point) which would enable me to hide the tower on the TV stand behind it. I also have force hot air heat, and there is a vent right next to teh TV, so dust is going to be an issue, will need a sealed and filtered case.
meanwhile I am going to experiment with the setup up here till I get it the way I want.

I built my i7 end of last year with a smaller fan and I've had no overheat issues. Even latest greatest drivers from AMD on their video capture do not support TV on Windows 7 yet. The i7 is one monster CPU though. Eats anything I have it do and and never really taxes the CPU, spikes briefly but that's about it. Best multitasking system I've ever had.

from what I have been reading, W7 default drivers for several capture cards work fine, whereas the provided drivers do not... people just installing the card and not running the software are having no problem. I'm looking at an Asus card at the moment i want to be able to connect my standard cable, as well as try out the antenna for over the air digital. how much sense does this make... all broadcasts are in digital now, comcast dumbs them down to analog, but if I want to watch digital broadcasts on cable, I have to pay more?

I think that Asus card is the one I am going to get. going to toss in a BluRay drive for the tower, and will have a pretty sweet personal media center up here.
