I have a netgear wireless router, WGR614, that I want to use as as a switch.
I want to plug it into my router and have it configured so that what I can see the entire network, so if I plug a wired laptop into the netgear, I can see the shared files on the systems on the linksys router, or if I access the wireless, I can see the whole thing as well.

If I understand correctly. Don't use the wan connection for the wires. just plug the wire from the router as a lan port to lan port 1 in the wireless router. I will look for docs but I believe I found this on a linsys or dlink support site. I will see if I can find it again.

I found a few links that had some useful information, ended up using a crossover cable, I think it's working.

by golly I think I got it! I can connect wirelessly and browse my network. I just relocated the wireless router downstairs to the new port I installed over the weekend, and everything is working I can now connect wirelessly anywhere in the house, I have extra ports downstairs for the bluray player, and whatever else I may install, like the new netgear EVA2000

Well, the wan and port 1 on the router are interchangeable, so by using one generally you can't use the other; so plug the router into your other router via port 1 and use the other ports as switching ports. You'll want to be sure you're only running DHCP on the router which will be your primary.
I'm doing the same thing here btw, my main is a WRT54GS v1.1 and my secondary is a WRT54G v5 (and my third is a vonage voice adapter)
