I am trying to ensure that new posters can't send private messages. We have spammers sign up and start sending PMs to people with sales pitches and it annoys our users.

I already have security set up so that people don't "become full members" until they make X posts, so I need to know what item to enable and disable to make this happen.

In the group settings it says

"Total # of private topics allowed "

but in the messages area it has "private messages". Are these the same things?

A couple ways you can do it. One would be "Max # of private topic participants" Just set that to 0.

And yes, Private Messages and Private Topics are the same thing. Need to clear up that wording for v8.

OK I did both the total number of private topics to 0 and the max # of participants to zero for the not-full-members. Thanks! Yes that was confusing to me

The relation in terms I think is Private Message as between 2 users however when three or more users are involved then it is classified as a private topic. But like Rick said it is the same thing.

I think the ability to have more then two users involved in a private message / topic is excellent.
