Just to confirm my suspicions:

You obviously need to be authenticated (logged in) to access an RSS feed of your PM inbox. So, is there any way access the RSS feed of your inbox from Outlook or Google reader?

(We're on 7.4.1, but I couldn't see anywhere where the issue was addressed in a later version.)

Under mystuff all forums will have a rss feed.
You need to setup a rss feed for a non native use.
Goto
Control Panel ยป RSS Feeds.
Follow directions when there depending on what you want.

I just was reading this again.
I guess I misunderstood your question.
I know that in v7.5X
You can goto mystuff>Feeds
Select the Private Messages Inbox feed.
There is a option at the top to send it to a reader.
It has a couple of default readers and you have the ability to choose something else using firefox. IE looks slightly different that you only can send it to your favorites in your browser.
Never tried that method though.
Because I use email notification on my PM box.

OK, I'm lost.

In that control panel, there are 3 tabs, Single Forum RSS, Multi, and My Feeds. Multi Forum is not configured. My Feeds is enabled. Single Forum is configured, but I cannot see anywhere where you can do anything with the Messages inbox.

Was this something added in 7.5?

Did you read my new post above yours?
Like I said not sure if it was in your version.

If you are trying just your private messages for a private rss feed.
I believe it is a browser option to subscribe.
But like I said I use the email option for the PM box and it works fine.

Just registered on your site and I see the option when viewing Mystuff>>Feeds

I didn't. I had that window open for a few hours responding in my (admittedly sparse due to work and twin babies) free time, so I missed it. Sorry.

We just had a user trying to get RSS feeds in Outlook and every feed worked except the inbox. I know you can do the email option (A LOT of our users use that option.)

Everything works fine in a browser (I've tried Firefox, IE, Safari, whatever) or something that would have authentication stored (even Apple Mail because of the system wide keychain). However, if you were to select google reader (for example) for your reader in FF, it gives you an error saying it cannot be added.

It's not a complaint. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. I'm just not seeing how an authenticated feed could be read in google reader or the like as the external reader doesn't have your login information - unless there was login information passed through the feed's URL.

Now, it looks as though 7.5.x may have that option (though I can't add my inbox here at ubbcentral as a feed in google reader, so if it is, the option evidently isn't running here.) I'll let the user know that email's his best option at this point and that it MAY be an option when we upgrade.

You could have them take a look at http://freemyfeed.com/ I haven't personally used it so I can't really give any review or recommendation but it's one of a few sites that do a sort of proxy to access authenticated feeds from readers that don't support authentication.
