I put statcounter.com code in my footer of every page along with my logo.

I see it on every page I open on the BBS.

Yet when i look at who's online I see all of these anon's, but statcounter never records them.

If I go on the site or a friend, stat counter records them. Are these anon's ghosts??

I don't have a lot of faith in those stat counters, I put code for one on my site, it shows me getting between 3 and 10 unique visitors a day, when my server logs show me getting over 1000 unique visitors a day.... something doesn't add up there.

Yeah, I understand the unique visitor discrepancy. Some use cookies, some IP address and who knows what.

But not even logging the visit is weird. And it’s not just one UBB install, I run like three of them and they all do the same. I just noticed it on this site because its new and the “STATS” were zero.

Maybe its spiders on my site, because stat counter does not track them, but the ip address’s are different when I compare an Anon to a spider in UBB.

Just weird.

I guess I could crack open the web server logs, but it’s a hosted server and it’s a PITA.

It very well could be that it just filters out, doesn't count, any spider traffic and is just looking for visits by actual users instead.

I guess I will investigate how STATCOUNTER determines a spider from a regular user.

Thanks

Wow, I got a response from the STATCOUNTER people. Their counter uses javascript, so this makes perfect sense.

Thought I would share....;-)

***************
The most usual spiders (search engine bots) are both Javascript and image disabled, therefore they can't be triggered at all by 3'rd party counters like Statcounter. Only logging scripts on the same server as the site are able to log them.

Only the image enabled bots, like Google's Image bot and Yahoo's Inktomi can be triggered by the <noscript> part of the Statcounter code, where the link to Statcounter includes a small (1x1 pixel) image. I don't know if there is any Javascript enabled bots, but I don't think there is any?

Well, I wasn't actually suggesting a spammer counter there; I was simply responding to a spammer's one-liner.

Not a bad idea, though!
