I finally found out today what my Social Security Disability checks will be and that they will start on December 31st of this year. It's only taken many emails and calls to Social Security and my senators office to get it done. It really pays to make a pain in the butt of yourself when dealing with those morons in Social Security. The local office was great, but it's been the idiots in Washington causing all the grief. I hadn't planned on retiring at 62, but my health dictated otherwise. However, I'm starting to really enjoy it. I don't have to be up at any specific time, if the weather is bad I can stay home and watch the snow pile up, etc. As long as I have my DirecTV HD and internet I'm a happy camper.

When I needed SSI, I was too weak to fight the scumbags, and I wasn't sharp enough to get legal help. I'm glad you were successful.

Well, like I said, it took an attorney who wasn't out to get as much money in his pocket as possible and a great Senator from Michigan named Carl Levin. I'll even forget that he's a Democrat...LOL. He worked absolutely wonders for me. He got the appeal time to 2 months down from 30 months and then kicked them in the butt again to speed up getting the money to me. I was writing emails to just about every politician I could find from Michigan. So I guess it's true, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Thanks, Giz. It was a tough fight and I'm certainly glad it's pretty much over now.

Good on you mate. Over here in the UK there's a family of benefit scroungers currently in the news, who are taking the **** out of the system. They are raking in £480GBP a week in benefits, have their house 99% paid for, and are complaining about not having enough money!!! People in the UK tend to take liberties with our system, because its got more holes than a teabag. And the very second you actually NEED benefits, they are like a brick wall. The poeple who are willing to sneak through the gaps, and take them for everything they have got get the money, whilst those who are desperate usually fall outside of some red tape set down 400 years ago.

I'm pleased to hear your battle was won though mate smile Always good when the common man gets a break.

Thanks. It was a very exhausting time, what with all the hoops I had to jump through, etc. I won't even get into the issues I've had with the state DHS agency. All they've done is give me grief at every turn.

Yup, that's pretty much what they did to me too. And when I became 'eligible' again they told me the program had been shut down. I received a letter from my Congressman today stating he is looking into their treatment of me. I'm also contacting Social Security again on Monday to ask why they said I'm eligible for Medicaid but DHS says I'm not. Someone is lying here. DHS also says I'm making $200 more per month from SSD than I really am, so they cut my food assistance down to $16. I'm tempted to tell them to stick it as far up where the sun never shines. It's an insult as far as I'm concerned.

I think Medicaid was automatic with SSI back when I was involved with it. At any rate, I was too sick to fight with them.

Medicaid is only good in the state your live in, You can not go to another state and expect to use it as they in most all cases will refuse to pay any medical charges.

Yes, I understand that, but my current state is remaining my home state and the one where I'd be going for regular medical care.

I'm just about to start this process, so this thread has me a bit worried.. Really thought it was a lot simpler than you describe.

It all depends on what you are starting. If it's regular social security you should have zero problems. But, if it's disability, hang on to your shorts as you are going to be in for a fight. Even after their own doctor said I should have been on it long ago, they still denied me, told me my appeal would be heard in 30 months and it took several letters to Congressmen and Senators before it got fast tracked. Then it took another letter to my main Senator to get the checks started.
