Bought a nice Vizio HD TV and upgraded to DirecTV HD yesterday and am loving it. Next step, purchase a Blu Ray player and I'll have all the electronics purchased for our move into our motor home next month. Sold all our old computers and got us each a new Gateway laptop, 17.3" screen, with an intel Core 2 duo processor, 4gig of DDR3 memory, 500mb hard drive, 4 USB ports, muli card reader,DVD read/write drive and built in web cam. It's also got a full numeric keypad which I really enjoy. Came loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium so I don't have to buy it like I had been planning. Going to get wireless keyboards and mice for them after the 1st of the month.

Oh you lucky lucky man... I'd kill to have the cash to buy a decent laptop at this point... (I'd totally use it for photography and "off site" development)

Sounds like you guys have quite the setup now; I'm so jealous lol...

How are you liking W7? I hear some people are having issues with the learning curve, coming from WXP.

Myself I got stuck with having to use vista with such a beefy setup (2.6ghz quad core machine with 4gb ram; XP wouldn't give me nearly as much bang than vista would). I recently upgraded to W7 64 Bit and am loving it (I highly recommend the 64 bit version if your hardware supports it)

Thanks to selling some items, etc we were able to get those laptops.

I've actually been running W7 since the last beta and then RC1 so I'm familiar with it. However, I moved from Vista over to it without any problems. But, for someone moving from XP I think would have a bit of a learning curve, but not that bad. When I speced out the laptops one of the things they needed was the 64bit version. I'm debating whether or not to make the jump to Ultimate from the Home Premium version. The upgrade isn't too bad at all, but I might bite the bullet and get the full version to make recovering from an oops easier.

I have the ultimate, there aren't too many things that I'd really use in it as opposed to home premium though...

ultimate just has all the language packs, business allows remote desktop connections coming into the machine, and has the virtual machine stuff for running XP only apps. I bought the family upgrade pack, 3 systems for $149.99.
you can do a clean install with it, just create a directory called windows.old before you activate it.

I have a similar box Gizmo. Sounds like a dell xps 420.
Mine is I believe a 2.2ghz quad 4gb ram.

Question...
Moving to w7 64 are you having any issues such as 3rd party software usage?
Or any addon hardware problems?

For me, I've not had any issues with the final version. In fact, it is the first version where I've not had to scramble around finding drivers for different things, or updated programs. Everything, so far, as worked perfectly.

It is the dell XPS 420; I have a 3rd party bios driver installed that has SLIC2.1. I didn't have any issues with w7 x64 ultimate recognizing device drivers... everything was recognized on first boot.

I just discovered with this Gateway I can actually increase or decrease the size of the vertical scroll area of the touchpad, very cool. I can also increase or decrease the magnification of the screen by finger control, and there are several other very cool features I can configure for the touch pad. I especially like the palm identifier so if your palm hits the touch pad while typing it doesn't send your cursor off into cyberspace. LOL.

TV is after coming on alot in the past few years, I'd say. HDTV and Blu Ray disks look really good when watched on a quality TV. Did anyone here see the 3D version of Avatar? It's absolutely crazy how good it looks. I can't wait until they bring 3D to the silver screen.
