This problem just popped up today on our UBB 7.22 installation:

When a board user try to access private messages, they get:

Quote
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE, expecting T_STRING in /home/readerra/public_html/scripts/viewmessage.inc.php on line 302

Only change to the server in last 24 hours has been enabling Mbstring. Could this be causing the problem?

Tried that. Didn't make any difference.

BTW, line 302 of the file viewmessage.inc.php is:

Quote
$homepage = "http://$homepage";

that line looks good.. well, it MUST be since it works on a ton of boards laugh

you could mickey around with it and try

$homepage = "http://{$homepage}";

or

$homepage = 'http://'.$homepage;

but i'd suspect you'll run into other places where the 'same' sort of completely valid thing occurs and causes you headaches..

More of the PM problems we're having.

The parse error occurs when you submit a PM or try to view one. The PM is sent but the string error for viewmessage.inc.php appears instead of a return to the PM screen.

I first thought it might be tied to an Easy Apache Update that added mbstring (to accommodate an update to Drupal 6 on the main site but removing Mbstring didn't correct the problem and no other changes were made to the server setup or the PHP configuration.

I tried re-installing the viewmessage.inc.php file but that didn't work either.

If nother other suggestion surfaces, I may have to flush the PMs from the MySQL. I rebuilt all the tables in the database but that didn't work.

Any ideas out there?

I am not sure if this would be the issue, but have you checked permissions (php) or maybe group permissions?

Yep. Checked all the permissions. Nothing out whack there.

And now a new problem has surfaced. When sending a PM a second user as added randomly.

This is getting weird.

I've flushed the PM tables, rebuilt the database and reuploaded the scripts and includes but nothing seems to work.

No hacks found in the files and I haven't applied any hacks to the site.

This is really weird.

Probably best to open up a support ticket so we can take a look directly. Would need to get admin info to your forums as well as FTP info.

Upgraded to 7.5.4.2 and that fixed the problem. Not sure why but it worked.

did you by chance upgrade to php 5.3 and above? i'd recommend not using anything newer than 5.2.12 for compatibility reasons.. this causes drupal headaches too (unless they've fixed that)

I spoke too soon. PM function is still adding random names to messages. I tried to open a support ticket but the system keeps claiming my license key (which I just renewed) is assigned to someone else.

This just ain't my weekend.

Interesting. I'm running 5.3.1 on five servers and 11 drupal installations (all version 6.15) without a problem. Same with multiple WordPress installs. Got just one UBB and it has decided to start flaking.

I know there are issues that SD said between ubb and 5.3+ Thought of the same thing he asked when I read your post.

well, i would NOT recommend running threads on anything above 5.2.12.. (depends how your php.ini is setup too)

we use deprecated functions (will be fix0red in v8) that 5.3 and above decided upon...

i found this out on my CentOS box when i also easyapache'd to 5.3.1 as well as my local WAMP install.. twas a bummer..

and as for php 6, they are gonzo bonzo alltogether..

as far as drupal 1 of other patches and another(joomla too), they HAD problems and i'd expect them to have fixed it by now.. note: that the symptoms vary from 'not working at all' to 'bothersome warning messages'.. YMMV

wordpress dodged the deprecated issue, by being ahead of the curve.. wink

--
offending functions that currently exist in 7.5.4.2 and are deprecated in php 5.3+ are:

safe_mode()
set_magic_quotes_runtime()
ereg()
eregi()
split() <-- used all over!
spliti()
---

for me, since i control my box and whatever php version runs on it.. it was a simple choice.. php 5.2.12 also since you gain nothing significant by running 5.3+ anyway..

it is your choice on your box(es), however and good luck wink

I'll try downgrading the PhP on the box running UBB and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Well that didn't help...

Downgraded to 5.1.12 and the problem got worse. Instead of adding a random second name to PMs it now adds three or four.

Tried flushing the caches, rebuilding everything and repairing the tables and it didn't make a bit of difference.

Assuming UBB answers my support request to clear up the confusion over my license number I'll let them take a look at it. At the moment this is the only installation on any server with a problem and it's turning into pure FUBAR.

i assume you did 5.2.12... but yah, i have threads 7.2.2 and 7.5.4.2 running on same box with no problem... (apache 2.2.14, mysql 5.1.41, php 5.2.12)

sooooo... looks like you'll need someone to take a closer looksee wink

good luck to you..

May have found the problem. Flushed the "private message users" table. Now test messages appear to go only to intended recipient and only that recipient.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'll keep the PhP version on this box at 5.2.12 for the time being and hope the problem is solved.

Thanks for your help.
