Seems to be up and running ok now. If you are on a shared host, it could have been just a temporary overload of mysql. When you get the unable to connect message, normally that means mysql just isn't responding at all. If it were to do that for an extended period of time, then your host would be the one to contact to find out what's going on.

I have no idea if the Forum is 'under attack' I always find it amusing to see how most users always think right away they are under attack. I'm not laughing that your forum was down but usually it means just what Rick had said.

well, in reality, lightningrod, MOST forums are under attack on a daily basis without their knowing it.. it's usually not the forum per se, but the IP of the box that they reside on... there are automated scanners from China, Taiwan, Ukraine (and others) continually trying to poke holes and compromise the server.. just a fact of life.. this is why it is always important to use STRONG passwords versus something easy like 'admin1234' for not only the SSH and FTP logins, but your admin passwords to threads as well.. just a good practice to keep in mind

I understand all that and have had forums and servers getting 10,000+ attacks a day on the SSH alone and all kinds of other attacks. I use passwords like "e78pks8be7" and so on for my stuff including accounts that are pretty much nothing accounts on my systems. No that is not a passowrd I have ever used or ever will by the way.
But my point was that no matter what users always start out with I've been attacked or I was hacked and so on without trying to understand what the message means.
If someone "hacked" or "attacked" a server or site I seriously think they wouldn't just stop at severing your database connection. They would be replacing your index pages, putting all kinds of crap on your site or board, putting forwards on your site to their site, injecting viruses through your site, or deleting everything and so on.

i have no idea how your answer applies to my reply, but whateva.. i was doing best practices for the OP in general.. the 'slowdown' was assumed to be an 'attack' and i pointed out that even thought it might be a natural reaction to not be so scared about it.. and instead just make sure to use some common sense about psws in general.. if i wanted to go further and talk about csf/ldf or other IPtable wrapping, it wouldn't really serve much here.. and we already have that whole convo going on in another thread.. so bottom line, it was a kinda thing for ligning-unit

Actually my reply was to your reply of my first post.......
Anyhow I wouldn't know anything about any of this even though I have 26 boxes running and been doing it since 1998, LOL.

nope.. as they say in Highlander.. 'there can only be ONE'.. and that is Rick.. i'm a 3rd party guy, who happens to prefer ubbthreads the product and rick the developer over any other BB software.. hands down, no contest
