I am currently using phpBB, which I have added a feature for attendance registration that allows users to select an option to say if they are attending the event or not. This then shows who is attending and who is not. Does your forum have anything similar to this feature

That's a good idea. My forum has a lot of events, too.

Nothing built in currently, but definitely sounds like a good feature to go along with the calendar. For now it would need to be modded in.
