Hello All,
We just moved to a new server and everything seems to be working well with one exception - I can't get any emails to go out. I did add in an smtp server but it didn't change anything. Any suggestions?

Well first thing is you need a master email address entered in:
Control Panel » Primary Settings
Board Email Address:
This the address the email is sent from.

Then you need to probably add that email address in your domain control panel so it will be a legit email address coming from your server.

Then if you need a smtp server entry then you need to verify with the host what it is.

We have a master email addy, lets say its [email protected]
for smtp server we have mail.ourdomain.com - been working fine for the last 5 years on our old server.

Are there any other edits we need to make? like php.ini, etc.?

But you said you moved to a new server??
That would mean that the master email account would need to be recreated.
And the smtp server name may be different on the new server also.
But anyway if you read the note in the control panel:
Use specified SMTP Server:
Normally this is controlled by php.ini. However if you need to send mail through another SMTP server and cannot do this by editing php.ini, you can specify it here.

One other thing you might test is the contact us link in the footer to the right.
Select it and send a email and see if you at least receive one.
Or the notify button in a post.

you may not even have to use the smtp server to send mail anymore as well..

i'd disable that part and let php's default sendmail give it a shot

Well I guess I was not that blunt SD.
When I pasted the note from the control panel.
But I tend to agree.
You first need to assure you have a working email address. Since moving to a new host you need to at least test the email address though.

Looks like there was a little confusion.
We moved to a new server - NOT to a new domian.
so www.ourdomain.com is still the same, we are just now on a new physical server.
the mail mail account hasn't changed and exists on the server.

I did see the note about the php.ini file but wasn't having much luck. I just thought I should check with the experts (you guys) first before I went to my server admins. Maybe it is something on their side.

We are having no other email issues (and have been on the new server for a week).

Okay.
No confusion.
Just because you have the same domain does not mean you have the same email server nor could the email server setup be the same as before or use the same software for the email server.
If it were me I would test the main email account used in ubb outside of UBB first.
Just to make sure the email account works both ways.Send and receive. Before looking at ubb as a culprit.
It could be either one but you need to start somewhere.

Also you could open a support ticket with UBB.

Could be any multitude of things that are really out of the scope of the UBB.

firstly, the SMTP server would be on your new server, and the A record would have to be set to the new server from the old.

A quick fix would be to try to just not use an SMTP server and see if it sends mails with php's default mailer.

Other than that you would have to test the smtp server to be sure it's configured and setup to allow mail relays

We have been using pop/smtp for the last week with no problems (using the main account that UBB uses). The mail servers are still mail.ourdomain.com - we just pointed the A record to the new server. I've tried leaving the UBB mail field blank, changed it to localhost and changed it to mail.ourdomain.com with no luck. As you suggested its probably a server issue but I thought I would post back here. I'll post back again and tell you what we figure out in the event it might help someone else.
