How can I reduce the width of "mini-profile" in topic view? BTW - why is it so wide?

Well right now you have a bare bones site with no islands or at least side bars. And only two posts So the main table is set to 100%. So it just sizes it to fill the screen. For now what you could do is just set the main table size to say 90 or 95%. Control Panel » Display Options [+] General Options Table Width: (all screens) That will shrink the whole screen display. including the column in question Then once you finish your site open it back up to 100% and hack some templates or styles, to customize it. Once you get the jist on how to navigate through the options available.

would be the same here if you turn off the right hand column..
since the style/theme uses a flex width scheme.. it is intended to fill the entire width and the author content is a percentage of that..
it's hardwired too
<td width="17%" valign="top" class="author-content"> to 17%
so it comes down to a philosophy dealio for you.. you can set your board width to a fixed value which is less and then the author-content will shrink..
additionally, you could actually modify the .tpl file to remove the hardwired width="17%" and rely on the class="author-content" instead..
this would allow you to change it in each style as desired..
-- personally --
i go with fixed width board themes styles and remove all 'percentage' based widths from installations.. but that is a board owner choice...
i have a 1920px width monitor and having a board stretch the entire screen looks 'bad' to me..
matter of fact, for THIS site, i modify the CSS in my browser to override the flex width to a fixed one..

I am not sure of the demo but you could add some islands to see the change in the display width. There are some canned islands like you see here such as calendar. Goto: Control Panel » Portal Layout the top 10 or so islands are canned. for the first one. "search" select left column 1 for the second one."Who's Online" select right column 1 for the third one. "Newest Members" select left column 2
That should show you something.
Oh don't forget to click on the update layout button on the bottom of the screen.
