Any recommendations on a free software package to back up a hard drive? I'd buy a commercial package, but on my very limited income it's not a viable choice at this point. Windows backup just plain sucks.

Don't have a answer for this. But I tend to agree windows default backup sucks bigtime. The only way I know it will work is to install a second drive that is at least as big as your primary drive. Forget about trying a cdrw or dvrw. If they are not big enough the ms software just barks back at you. It will not span multiple disks no matter what they say.

Yes, I found that out trying to back up to a dvd the other day. If I could run the MAC OS on my laptop, I'd be doing it. My only other choice would be to run Linux, but I'm not sure how to get it to hook up to my MiFi card and other wireless hotspots.

thanks Giz, I'll keep that in mind if I decide to make the switch. There are a couple of other issues that I need to figure out first before I do anything as radical as move from Windows to Linux.

Dual boot ... Great way to make the move... BTW, if you are interested in making the move, I have a site The GoNix Initiative to aid in replacing software most people "have to have".

I made the move a few years ago and started with dual boot. It really isnt that bad of a transition at all. I only use windows for a few programs, like photo shop and dreamweaver for making templates. The backup of my ubuntu system takes about 20 min. And if something goes south, type in a cmd and in about 30 min the computer is back 100% from the backup.
