Not so much a bug, more of an entry on the to do list.

I think that the FB / Twit feature should not be global but an option in the Forum Permissions as there's not much point in having it displayed in private or hidden forums.

i'd just turn it on globally, but check the Guest CAN_READ forum permission and that turns it off for 'private' forums..

no need to add a new forum permission

small change to showflat.inc.php to accomplish it.

basically the logic would set $facebook and $twitter to NULL, if the current thread isn't Guest READable

On the subject of facebook (twitter) since updating to V 7.5.6 the "who's Online" shows a flooding of facebookexternalhits.

Within a few seconds also then a google hit for the exact same thread post as facebook requested

This is putting as many as 60 hits concurrently putting more load on server and data throughput.

What in V 7.5.6 is causing this and how to control as it not really bringing in new users at all ?

I put into robots.txt

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

User-agent: *
Crawl-delay: 120

User-Agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /

And google still is loading the server with requests 24/7

The way facebook works is if their is if someone likes a page/topic and that page isn't yet in their cache then they send out the crawler to grab it.

The only way to stop that from happening would be to disable the facebook like button in the control panel, or possibly block their user agent, but that might prevent it from showing how many people like the topic.

As for google. They are always going to be there. But you can get more control of it and see what they are doing by signing up for their webmaster tools.

I turned off the facebook icon and see if that stops the flooding and let you know if that worked. Not sure why just the icon turned on would cause them to flood the server with requests

Right before I turned it off the who's online showed at least 25 facebook hits concurrently within a few minutes

I updated to V 7.5.6 over 24 hours ago so you'd think they would have cached the 2 posts I myself set to like
