Anyone on here using one of these? I've been thinking about getting one the first of the year when we get back to Tombstone. But, tonight I found out I can buy the books for them and read them on my PC with their free Kindle reader for the PC. Pretty cool. Downloaded a sample of "The Hobbit" and it displayed perfect and was very easy to read. Some books are as low as $1.43.

I've heard some "rare" cases that they can revoke rights to books bought through amazon, so I'd stay away from it (if I buy the darned thing I expect to keep it). I think I'd go for an ipad though, it's sexy...

I wonder what price tag they'll be looking at... I'd love to have one, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford it anytime soon (business slow, finances wrecked, etc)

Same here!! A friend does home audio integration and is starting to use the ipad and a remote control to control all audio, lighting, etc. I can only imagine what can come to gpad hopefully it will be great and not too much $$, lol.

Nothing from Apple for me. Since most of my reading would be done at home, my laptop is working prefect for me. Found "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" on Amazon for no cost and it downloaded in less than 10 seconds. Been reading it with their free reader and it's quite nice. Not as easily 'portable' as the Kindle, but better than having a book to figure out where to store when done.

How's that working for you?

I still may get a Kindle after the first of the year, only because it's so much easier to take with me when I'm sitting someplace and have time to kill.

Erin has been using kindle for the droid and really likes it although it does put a bit of strain on her eyes after awhile. So she's got the newest Kindle coming on Tuesday.

Cool on the price wars. I'm definitely going to buy a Kindle after the first of the year, or sooner if we don't have to spend a fortune on the motor home repairs. I used to read all the time, but I just don't have the room to keep books around, what with living in the motor home full time now. Plus the book prices are a lot less via Kindle than the actual paper version.

of all my geeky habits and love of tech and gadgets, this is one thing I won't get.
yes, there are cheap and free ebooks, but most are still 9.99, even older titles.. why should I spend $9.99 on an ebook when I can get the real thing for less 99% of the time?

if I buy a $20 hardcover book, it should include a coupon or something for a free ecopy,.

I can understand the convenience of the device, having multiple books in less space than a single book takes, very handy when travelling, saves space, and you don't have to bring a ton of books in case you are a fast reader, etc, but I can do that on my android phone, or my netbook, if I am really that hard up for something to read and want to spend that much money for something. If I am going to spend that much, I want something tangible, something I can keep.

that and the fact that I am very fond of reading a real, paper page book, and enjoy having my favorites on display in the book case.

I'm with Bad Frog though, I like the feel of a real book... i can't even read an ebook on my computer without throwing a tantrum lol

That's what I thought too, but with my very limited space, it made perfect sense for me to get them electronically. That and the fact I couldn't find the one book I'm reading at any of the stores in my area. It's not for everyone, that's for sure, but for me it's a great alternative.

I've had a kindle since they first came out. I use it all of the time, but some of the ebooks are getting a bit pricey. As others have said, you'd think you'd just need to pay a fraction of what you would pay for the actual physical book, but in some cases they are just as expensive.

I've noticed it's more related to now newly released the book is in print. As they 'age' it seems the price comes down. Still, it's much more convenient for my lifestyle considering how little room I have for books and other really unnecessary items.

I bought an iPad a couple weeks ago and all I've really used it for is reading my .pdf books from O'Reilly et al. I like the larger screen and being able to quickly search the book for a particular method or function. The weight and cost are the obvious downsides. I have a friend who sold his in preference for his Kindle, but he was reading mainly novels.

I'd buy the iPad for productivity; not just ebooks... Either the ipad or a laptop would be ideal, when funding permits tongue

Cost is a big thing to me, along with portability. My laptop works great, but taking it anyplace is a real hassle just to read a book while waiting for whatever. I still think after the 1st of the year I'll get the Kindle. I looked at other e-book readers and really didn't like what I saw.

Motorola Droid running c:geo. Awesome free app from a CZ developer. Just got a Garmin etrex Venture HC to compare against the phone when setting out my own caches. Also wanted something with a better antenna/WAAS for when I'm under a heavy tree canopy. The Droid will run me around in a big triangle until the zero settles down while jumping 50-60 feet away when I get close.

Just found an app for iPad called Air Display, allows you to use your iPad as a second or third monitor. Very very cool.

I'm teetering on the brink of falling into iPad land. Should I fall in, or hold out for iPad 2?

It depends what you're planning to use it for most. Though, once you have one you'd probably want another so you wouldn't mind having to wait in line again for the new one when it comes out.

I think we're pretty close to learning some concrete details about iPad2. If I recall correctly there are already two Apple press events scheduled for January and one is almost certain to involve the iPad2.

For me, the only thing that the current iPad is really missing is more RAM. At least, all the rumors mention a RAM increase so anything else they might also thrown in will be a bonus.

Just wanted to say I just got my Kindle last weekend, and LOVE it smile I have read 4 books on it and it is great. I also have the Kindle app on both my ipod touch and my PC (I run it under Wine on Ubuntu because they do not have a Linux version yet) There are a lot of free books on the Amazon site. It is easy on they eyes. I would have loved to get a iPad, but did not have $500 burning a hole in my pocket frown

i went for the nook color, rooted it and now i have a full fledged tablet with eReader.

love it and the price of $250 works too for a mini iPad (7"), basically

gonna slam froyo on it and eventually honeycomb, when that comes out

i have the kindle reader app on it for all my kindle stuff as well as the B&N reader for epub stuff..

excellent deal, imho

all the info you'd need to autonoot is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=864

easy to do and you can always go back to stock, if you want wink
