On a yearly basis I like sending out a newsletter to all member of my forums. This provides updates and reminders to members who don't visit regularly and tends to bring back some that may have strayed. I have looked into a couple options not excluding creating my own and sending it out using a program that spaces the outgoing mail to avoid being suspected of spamming. Many services want you to pay a monthly fee which I don't need if I am only sending 1000-2000 emails twice a year.
Do any of you do something similar and what methods, software and services do you use or recommend?

I have used email lists to circumvent email limits even on the same host but. You may consider Mindraven for hosting since. It is stated in the following post: https://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/239387/Emails_per_hour.html#Post239387Then you could just use the ubb control panel and eliminate any extra steps.

Changing web hosts just to send two newsletters a year is a bit drastic don't you think? The last time I did this I created my own HTML letter and used some free program that sends them out in batches using my own emal account. I used the UBB member functions to pull a list of emails which I pasted into the program and let it rip. It worked but I don't want to risk breaking an rules with my host. That just requires knowing them and staying within the boundaries. I looked into Constant Contact but it looks like they want you to sign up with them monthly. I would prefer a "one shot" deal a couple of times/year. I'll keep looking...

# phplist is a one-way email announcement delivery system. It is great for newsletters, publicity lists, notifications, and many other uses. (It is different from group mailing list systems like mailman.) # The Web Interface lets you write and send messages, and manage phplist over the internet. # phplist keeps sending messages from your web server, even after you shut down your computer. assumed that is what you wanted

Looks way better than say ListMessenger (that I actually ended up paying for forever ago), and it's free

We use phplist for our monthly newsletter. Works pretty slick.

I've looked into using phplist to send a message to all of our registered users, but we are on dreamhost and they only allow, depending on how nicely you ask, about 500 to 700 emails an hour to go out. With almost 20k members it would take all day to send out a newsletter. Constant Contact has always looked like an attractive option with their metrics and I think if you can find a sponsor for your newsletter then you could easily offset the cost.
Won't you take me to Funkytown?

Well I loaded phplist finally and have started to mess with it. It is definitely not that straight forward to figure out but I suppose if I give it time it may prove worth while for me.

what i did was take the nice templates from mailchimp (free) and slam them in as a starting point.
