A member asked me if I could change his username. My first assumption is that it can be changed by modifying the database but I don't want to assume anything. Is this possible and is it as simple as editing the user in the database or are there more steps involved?

That does it

but really the username is only for login and all board members 'see' the display name, which can be modified in Control Panel.

now, if he just got divorced and doesn't want wifey knowing his username or whatever... laugh

you can change the ubbt_USERS table USER_LOGIN_NAME and he's good to go wink

I'd like to see some control to update it, either as an admin only feature or something...

The guy simply wants to streamline his usernames in all of the websites he visits. I have no problem with this - I just wanted to be sure it could be done with no ill-effects.

+1 on that though I will say this is the first request I have gotten for this in the 5 years my forum has been running.

I am not so sure about this.

What would happen if you have a duplicate USER_LOGIN_NAME in the table?
For example I register as John Doe and display name is Johnny.
What happens when another user registers as John Doe and display name is John and has a different email.

Will that work?

the DB structure allows dups, but i assume since he is DB diving he'll make sure the _new_ user login name isn't found elsewhere in the DB

OTAY.
I do the same. But I thought the query when registering was a "and" to check for dups.
If doing some db diving I was not certain what happens if you enter a dup user name.

yes, the scripts all prevent dups, but when you dive into the DB, unless there are indices set up to force UNIQUE or a PRIMARY KEY kinda dealio (which there aren't for the ubbt_USERS table), it will allow it

We have the ability to change user's login names via the control panel in v8.

I assume both display name and/or login name

Changing the database worked fine with no ill-effects. User is logging in and posting with new username.
