Hi Friends

Got below from one of my modserators.
Can you figure out what this bug is?

Morgan Lad ...

I've found a bug in the moderator's tools, which has caused the loss of a post !

Now then, There was a post about John Hewitt last week, saying he'd passed on. As I *knew* a lot of people had met the guy, I madfe that a sticky.

Now *another* BSAOC guy has died, and agin, He was well known. So, NOT wanting to just make ANOTHER post sticky, I chose to us the MERGE option ?

I got the post ID Number for the John Hewitt post, and I merged the two, leaving a 'pointer' in place to direct users to the new 'merged' post ?

Well. What the bloody hell ?
What happened was this.

The post I chose to merge, stayed exactly where it was. The Post I told it to merge *WITH* has dissappeared? A pointer has appeared ... way...way .... down the list, but when you try to follow it, it says :

'Cannot find this in database'

As I said earlier ...
Arrrrrgh !!
Help!
G.

The Merge tool.

I could write an essay about its qwerks.

Limit its use to splitting topic's
Its a great idea to Merge topics but as Rick Explained to me in the past, if you change your view to "Threaded" view, you can see every new marker as a new dog leg. and its there where it falls down.

I'm lead to believe from many moons ago it was to recieve some attention but more clarification to just what its capable of.

So a new button of say "Split Topic" may come about.

Its just not worth the risk merging.
It may not have helped with one of the threads being featured either.

Its complicated behind the scenes, but Rick has looked at it several times. Maybe New Hope with V 8 ?

LOL I have been burned on the "merge" before. laugh The worst was several years of input and who knows how many posts. I started to test the waters with removed topics and mashing them together. Kind of figured out a way but do not even want to try and type it into a post. Too much confusion and you will get no relief when you loose a large amount something. There is workings I believe in the works and testing being had. This I know but do not ask me how. wink grin

Best advice is do not splurge on the merge for right now like Mark S has said.
