I haven't had a real need to really do maintenance on my board other than to do a weekly backup to databases (in case of the worst case scenario hardware failure) but my boards run fairly smooth without going crazy on maintenance. I would say every year or so I optimize tables etc. and prune out orphaned topics etc. but other than that I don't know of any real maintenance that is required to be done to keep things smooth.

This said, I would consistently keep up with updates with php and apache as there are often security fixes that keep them smooth. Also Rick and team will update software when they find/fix a security issue as well.

Dunny

IMO,
The biggest issue I see with users, is not making backups.
and I mean the database as well as the files.
Usually what happens is the host has a problem or they upgrade something.
And then people have problems with:
Oh my config.inc.php file is 0 bytes and it is empty.
My forum is down.

Or

One of my tables are corrupted.

Or
I was making some changes and now it is all hosed up.

Also another item is people never turn on server logs in the control panel.
Then when they have a problem all they get is a generic message that they have a database issue.
If the log was on to begin with they could just view the log to see what the actual error was.

So other than that.
The time to learn how to make backups is before you have a problem not after the fact.

Unless your board is really really big and you have mega traffic and posts. I don't see a issue to even prune posts, optimize tables and bla bla bla

PS,
Also don't forget to preserve your virgin preinstalled copy of what version you are using.
