Hi all. Our UBB board has, just in the last few days, started running very slow for all our members. The only change I've done this week is add an RSS feed for one forum with a 5 minute cache (Just changed that to 30 minutes). Still slow.

Would going to CP/Database Tools/Information and optimizing all the tables on that list help? Or might there be another possible candidate for the speed decline?

Thanks very much,
tee

i would check your sever if its all out of the blue.

Run TOP via ssh

Depends on spec and how many users traffic.

If you have a lot of forums ?

I turned on unread post on the main forum and it kicked me from

0.03 to 2.5 seconds for a page load ok i had 99 forums.

That option in the cp does warn you of server load.

1. We only have 20 forums with 100+ posts/day
2. Do not know about TOP, not a programmer.
3. We've found that in the mornings the board is extremely slow but for a while in the afternoon it picks up to almost normal.
4. Would optimizing all the tables in the CP help as a first check?
5. Might this need a ticket?

Thanks again,
tee

Very fast for me too!
I would suspect that the tables at this point don't need to be optimized.
But rather something else is going on in the morning.
Could be a connection issue due to:
What hops your site takes to get to the backbone or in reverse your users back to the site. One of those hops could be having some issues.

Or your host has been doing some upgrade maintenance at that time.

I mentioned to our Chief Administrator that it's like taking a car to the garage:

"But the engine was knocking really badly a few hours ago. Honest."

I did disable the one RSS feed to see what happens tomorrow morning.
Thanks very much for taking a look.

It's funny you said that.
I have had my car at the dealer on and off for the last two months. It has a intermittent bus communication fault that shuts down the engine while driving.
And of course when i take it in, it works perfect.
Spent $921.00 and it still does it.

Well, spending $921 isn't that funny, especially if the problem isn't figured out. Good luck!
In your case, you don't want a ticket... smile

Contact your host, there are many things that could be going on that only they could identify. If you get hit by multiple search engines during a busy day you could have memory faults or exceed your concurrent connection limit in apache.

With a board as big and popular as yours I would learn how to use the command line. Peepcode has some good screencasts to get you started.

http://peepcode.com/products/meet-the-command-line

A few command that can be very helpful in identify problems are:
free -m : will tell you how much memory have are using and how much is available, might depend on your environment a bit if you are using a PS or not.
ps aux | grep http | grep -v "\(root\|grep\)" | wc -l : tells you how many concurrent apache connections there are.

The test tee tried - of disabling the RSS feed (just one forum) - seems to have done the trick, as the board returned to it's usual speedy self and hasn't slowed again... yet. So far so good anyway. Thanks guys, for popping over and having a look - the support here is super.

Thanks for the peepcode link, cascadeclimber! It looks interesting but may be above my head. blush

well, enabling an RSS feed should _not_ slow down the board, so that should really be looked into.

RSS feeds make the world go round smile
